News of july
How much room is left for individual freedom when motherhood continues to be presented as every woman’s natural destiny?
What do we leave behind when we choose not to have children?
And what remains of a life when the person who lived it is no longer here?
This month’s stories, though very different from one another, attempt to answer these questions.
From Cuenca, María Teresa recounts her decision not to have children, asserting her right to build a life true to herself, even when this means defying social expectations.
Alongside her, Gabriele (Essen, Germany) recounts an equally personal journey, outside the traditional family model, without facing any particular pressure and without regretting not becoming a mother. Her fondness for children has found expression in other forms of closeness and care, within a life rich in relationships and independence.
This month we are also publishing a special personal account. Aurelio shares his story, remembering his wife Sara, who passed away after a long illness. Now that Sara is no longer with us, their shared choice not to have children leaves not a void, but a living legacy, made up of love, freedom and presence. A testimony that reminds us how even what is not passed on biologically can continue to live on in the people we have met.
Meanwhile, RACCONTAMI – listening and memories – continues: this is the project through which, until December 2026, we are inviting people aged 65 and over to share their memories, life experiences, relationships, changes and recollections linked to Sardinia.
The project is aimed at Sardinians, both on and off the island, at those who live in Sardinia today and at those who continue to feel it is part of their history. You can take part by telephone or in person; we’ll decide together on the method and time of the meeting.
A podcast series will be created from these testimonies: a mosaic of voices that preserves individual memories and, together, a part of Sardinia’s collective history.
