VANESSA: «My name is Vanessa, I am 46 years old and I have an 11-year-old daughter whose name is Sofia. Parenting… The truth is that being a mom changed my life. Not only in everyday things, it really changed my way of thinking, the way of being in the world, it changed me deeply. Before I was more unstable, scared, I had so many thoughts. Now I’m calmer, more at peace, more stable, Just a little… The truth is that when you have a daughter, when you have to raise her, you have to learn to give importance to what deserve it.
One concern I had was: “how do I teach something to my daughter”? I realized a very important thing: if you want to teach something you have to do it, not just tell them, as children follow the example of their father and mother. And I’m not just talking about education, I am referring to deeper things: sensitivity, respect for those who are different from you, help those in need, welcoming others. Life values, right? And if you have to do that, you have to learn it first. The truth is that with my daughter I’m understanding love, because I had never understood it before. And with her sometimes I think: “This must be love”!
She’s eleven now, and she doesn’t like kisses, she doesn’t like being hugged, she doesn’t like to talk about herself. She likes to be with her friends, it is hard to accept it. But it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced.
Being a mother has changed the organization of my daily life, my energy, because I put a lot of energy in my daughter’s upbringing. And it is the most important thing for me. She gave me a direction, because I felt lost before. She’s like a light, that guides you to where you’re going. And the same thing happened to me at work. I am able to choose what I want and don’t want to do, what I like. That is very important, where to put the energy, right? Vitality… and my daughter taught me to be a mother.
I don’t know a word to say… “woman without children”. It’s a woman, a person, I’m not interested. Being a mom is an adventure, like… like a creation, a work of art. It can be with a child, it can be with something else which is very close to your heart.
To be a mom, to be a dad, you need help, you need a community. If there is no community it’s very hard to be a parent, and I don’t like the thought of raising my daughter alone. I want a community, and every day I do something to keep this community going. I’m not enough for my daughter, I need the others. One of the reasons people do not have children is this: they feel lonely. It is very difficult to decide for someone who is not you.
Something I thought when Fabio called me for the interview is that Sassari is the language of my mother and grandmother, and now I’m back in Sardinia my daughter is growing up also in Sassari. It is very, very important. to try and say things in your own language.»
Sassarese:
VANESSA: «Soggu Vanessa, soggu cantante e mamma.
Una preoccupazioni chi v’abia era “cumenti fozzu a insignarle calchi cosa a me figliora”?
Abà v’ha ondizi anni, e no li piazini li basgi, no li piazi assè abbrazzada, no li piazi raccuntà li cosi.
Soggu capazi di isciubarà lu chi vogliu fa, lu chi no vogliu fa, lu chi mi piazi. E chisthu pa me è un bè impurthanti: undi punì l’energia, no?
Si no hai comunidai è assai difiziri assè genitori, e a me no mi piazi pinsà di criscì me figliora a la sola. Eu vogliu la comunidai, e d’ugna dì fozzu calchi cosa pa tinilla chistha comunidai. Eu no soggu suffizienti pa me figliora, v’aggiu bisognu d’althra genti.
