In Cuenca, two women, one of whom is of Taiwanese origin, discuss their experiences. Both have chosen not to have children, despite the numerous social judgements they have faced, which they list and explore with irony and depth, protecting above all the right of each to self-determination.

FU YU: «My name is Fu Yu Chang, I was born and have parents in Taiwan. I have lived here in Cuenca since I was eight years old, I’m 37.»
ROSI: «I’m Rosi, I was born here in Cuenca, I’m 54 and I live here. Being a mother, I guess it is considered as if it were a natural, biological function, which must be respected socially. That’s what I heard by my grandmothers, by my mother, by many friends who are also mothers. And let’s say it’s like a construction of what has always been, historically, understood in this way. That’s the way it is. Period.»
FU YU: «Well, where I come from, my parents are from Taiwan, well, I think it’s natural, too. For my mother’s generation it was implied that a woman had to be a mother. There was nothing else. Adoption, for example, it wasn’t the same. Being the mother of an adopted child wasn’t like being a mother, getting pregnant, giving birth and all that. But I think now in Taiwan things have changed, because I know it’s more urban and all. Some of my friends and other people of my generation in Taiwan, many people don’t want to have… women who do not want to have children. But not here, not here yet.»
ROSI: «I think it’s more… Yes, I would think that… that the general idea to start a family means having children, like there’s no family without children. I am referring to the previous generation, that of our grandparents, of our mothers, things went the way as it should be. Perhaps already today the new generations of women have other ideas, I have other ideas about it too. Now that has changed, too.»
FU YU: «This reminds me of something funny of when I got married. There was a friend’s father, who told me: “Well, when are you going to have kids then”? I said I didn’t want children. He said: “Wait till you get married”. I said I was getting married because I wanted to share my life with him, not because I wanted children. But the idea was that you got married to have children.»
ROSI: «It happened to me, too. Similarly, when I got married, when I got into my relationship, I didn’t want to have children, neither did he. For me it was: “Wow! That’s beautiful, what a relief, I did not have to go along with this desire, of a person, of his family who wants me to have children”. He already had daughters, I didn’t have children. So, for me it was… I don’t have to stick to that. It is seen as some kind of fulfilment which you have to carry out. Because if it’s a natural desire, okay, I respect a natural desire. Many people want things in life, professions, travel, friends, couples. And children, too. But if it’s not a wish, it shouldn’t even be an imposition and an obligation, I guess.»
FU YU: «For my job, I take care of several elderly people in rural areas. And when I do home visits, most of these elderly people are abandoned, they have no one to take care of them. But they have like 10, 8 kids. Then they always ask me: “When will you have a child? You don’t have children? Why wouldn’t you have children? Who will take care of you”? Yes. Of course, well, I feel like telling them: “And who takes care of you”? As it’s not really a guarantee even having children that someone will take care of you. And then they too, that is, earlier I guess it was thought that having kids was like securing a future, a support for old age or something like that. But it’s not the same anymore.»
ROSI: «It happened to me, too. Similarly, when I got married, when I got into my relationship, I didn’t want to have children, neither did he. For me it was, wow! That’s beautiful, what a relief, I did not have to go along with this desire, of a person, of his family who wants me to have children.
FU YU: «As I said, I too get asked “for whom I live”? They tell me: “Why then? I mean, what do you work for?” For what? For me, and I’m selfish as I say, I don’t do it as I like it this way and because it’s for me. Even so, actually, I had a crisis too, because I never wanted children. I didn’t even want to get married, but in the end I did, but I never planned to have children. Anyway society puts quite a pressure on you, I mean, they always expect it. There was a moment in my life when I thought: “What’s wrong with me? Maybe I am not well”. And I had to talk to a psychologist, I went into therapy. From there, I started to get to know a lot of other women who had no children and they had no problem with that. So, for me it was… I said: “No, it’s okay, right”? But there comes a time in life where you feel selfish, because you do everything for… for one.»
ROSI: «And besides being selfish, you start being seen as perverse and malevolent: “Why don’t you want to have children? You are a freak! How can you? It’s so natural? Every woman feels it”. Honestly, never in my life I felt the maternal instinct. Ever! I don’t know what that is. So, when girls talk about they say… yes, If I’m nasty, then I’ll go to hell and I’ll meet all my other friends who were not moms. It’s like it’s a punishment not to be a mother, as you are not fulfilled, you didn’t do your duty and because in the end, what do you exist for, right? So, when I try to explain it, I mean, no, I don’t even think about it. For me it’s not a conflict, not being a mom and not wanting to be. I don’t even think about it. I think it’s the first time that I talk about a topic like that, in a relaxing and open way, in a super cute space, for a project I love, because for me it wasn’t a conflict. It was just something in life, let’s the cycle is around the fact that we are equipped to be mothers, but socially, personally, it wasn’t a conflict for me. Never.»
FU YU: «They say unconditional love can only be experienced if you’re a mother. I guess we’ll never experience true love. That’s it. But this is what they put in our head, because… I think, one of the decisions… one of the reasons why I decided not to have children it was because I always liked to travel. Well, I do community medicine, then I always wanted to go to the country and all that. And I wouldn’t bring my children in country or things like that. I made the decision and I said: “No, let’s see, if I had kids, what kind of life would I give them and what kind of life do I want to live”? And nothing, then, I couldn’t have my children traveling all the time. I think society needs me more childfree, because I can, be more useful, I don’t know.»
ROSI: «I remember at school, ever since we were little, you know when we played, all thinking how nice to have children, like the typical Susanita of Mafalda, who you always see with the little children, right? It’s an Argentine cartoon, it’s a little girl, an Argentine girl character by Quino, who has this very cute character called Susanita who always dreams of having children. When asked: “What’s the perfect future of the verb to love”? She says: “Children”. It’s divine, I love her. So, that’s why I say that at school, when we were talking about having kids or children in general, not even at that time I thought that one day, and for no specific reason, whether for study or for work, or because I wouldn’t give them a life… as they say too, a decent life. I had no idea why I didn’t want to have kids but it went well and I didn’t.»
FU YU: «They haven’t told her you are going to feel the instinct. You’ll feel the instinct.»
ROSI: «I waited for this instinct, but no. It never reached me. I don’t know if it’s a biological issue, or psychological, emotional, affective. Because I have a super couple relationship, a little bit is that too. When they tell you, I mean, about the perpetuity of the species, and when it will be your turn… I don’t know… I mean, not even that for me, it did not exist. As I said, it didn’t even generate any conflict for me.»
FU YU: «Or the threat: “You’ll regret, you know? Women can only have children up to a certain age. Then, when you’ll want, you won’t be able to do it anymore”. If I’ll regret it, I’ll deal with it, but later. They are decisions and one has to…»
ROSI: «I have a great relationship with children, with young people, I was a teacher, I’ve worked with young people, and people always told me, you’d make a great mom, because you have good chemistry, get along with them and all. I love being surrounded by young people, I didn’t have to give birth, nor feel the pain, like Eva, you will give birth with pain I thought it was great that I never experienced it and that I did not have to deal with this issue in my life, so, all is well.»
FU YU: «Joking about it, it’s nice to have kids when you can return them. And now, take it back.»
ROSI: «But maybe we’re also seeing a little bit just this side… that children are a nuisance, are a difficulty, they often stand in our way, in our life projects, but it’s not just that, right? In the end, they are part of your life, they are with you. From our personal relationships with our mothers, we receive love and affection for a lifetime. I mean, it’s not like I should only be seen like this, right? But generally speaking, being childfree, we are somehow freer, right?»
FU YU: «They want to convince by telling you: “But it’s beautiful, it’s the best thing that can happen to you when you’re a mother, it changes your life”. Exactly. I don’t want to change my life.»
ROSI: «Yeah, something like that or they tell you: “If you haven’t had a child, you don’t know what it’s like to be a woman, you haven’t lived fully, and you know anything”. I think there are many different experiences in life: things that we are not born knowing, there are things we will never learn. Of course, I understand motherhood is like that too, it must be physically and emotionally overwhelming, I understand that. We’ve all felt love and we’ve been vulnerable, we loved and so on. Yes, we didn’t experienced it directly on our body, we haven’t given birth to a child, but I think finally there are also other experiences somehow, although they cannot be compared as all things are different. They’re not even comparable, are they?»
FU YU: «Since you wanted to know more of cultural differences, we in Asia believe in reincarnation and this mother-daughter relationship, is believed to be due to karma. So, I think that a part that traumatized me a bit, from my mom’s comments, who said that when something went wrong, because she had done something bad in her past life so that she had to put up with in this life. Then I say: I want to stop the karma so I don’t have to give anything back to anyone afterwards. As you’re supposed to close the circles, and what you don’t close them in this life, you have to close in another life and these bond between children and parents is quite strong, according to our beliefs. So, now we have to break that as well not to continue in the circle.»
ROSI: «When they tell you: “Now you can’t understand, but when you’re a mother you will, and through your child you will pay everything you’ve done to me”. So, please! We’re loading the whole family history through which the children pay, even the parents’ faults, I mean and the women’s faults, too.»
ROSI: «For them, it’s important to have a son, that the first child is a boy, to carry on the family name, too. It is seen like this, to work, to accompany him in his work as a man. That is, this is differentiated, and it’s important, I understand, that also for them, I believe that it’s for the functioning of the family itself, because somehow there is no family without children.»
FU YU: «In China, in Taiwan, where I come from, it’s still important to have a son, someone who will carry on the family name. My sister, you see… doesn’t have any children. She has a problem with her mother-in-law as the mother-in-law wants her to have children, because otherwise you lose the family surname, because her husband is the eldest son, and must have a child to carry on the family name and the lineage. So, here’s the conflict. It’s more than anything so as to not interrupt family lineage, they want this. Here, sometimes, I think they consider it as a proof of love. I talk about the people I work with, I often work with women who are young and have six children. So, if you tell them: “Why don’t you tie your tubes”? They say: “No, if we split up and then I get married again, I can’t give a child to the new husband”. I mean: “But you already got six”. But it’s a new couple. Well, if you say so… but yeah, some women think it’s like… “I’m giving him a child”.»
ROSI: «Well, it’s like thinking on a material level who you’re producing for, who are you working for? To whom will you leave your things? I think universally maybe there’s this idea, I don’t know. For me personally, well, there’s a legacy, of course, which is intellectual, spiritual, natural, social, all of this, which comes with family, of course. Also the material things. I mean, parents always tell you: “The house is yours, when we’re gone, you will share it with your siblings”. So, yeah, if I have something, well, someone will receive, otherwise as the ancients said: “If you don’t have kids, if the state will take everything”. I guess nephews and nieces, your siblings, parents, there is a legally established line that determines who receives if there isn’t one… someone who claims it within the family. So, even there, but me personally, I don’t even think about it much, no… I wish to live in peace with what I have, enjoying it today and… and not thinking about what the others will do.»
FU YU: «Not having children frees you somehow. There’s no one fighting about your stuff, and you don’t have to worry to leave nothing to anyone.»
ROSI: «At some point in your life path, things will pass on to someone. your nephews and nieces… Nephews and nieces in my case…»
FU YU: «… but all the same, what is linked to spiritual or intellectual inheritance, that is not material will stays with people, with friends, I don’t know.»
ROSI: «… with whom you shared your life…»
FU YU: «You don’t have to have children to leave this.»
ROSI: «Yeah, I think a lot of women, when we meet among friends, talk about all kinds of topics, right? And yes, sometimes, we talk about these things, sexuality, children, family, money, a little. Yes, we talk about it in our circles. We meet friends, we have a coffee, a tea, or we comment on such topics. Otherwise, we talk about other things.»
FU YU: «As they say, “God creates and they come together”. So, our friends, they are people with whom we can talk about this but not in larger groups.»
ROSI: «Sure, it’s a more intimate conversion, topics you don’t share with much larger groups, but with two, three, four friends is super nice, because you also have a laughs, right? It is also liberating talk to friends and remember things, finding common ground we all share in a moment, right? It is very nice.»
FU YU: «I mean, my mother… she… I think she is sorry, as none of her three children have kids. She has no grandchildren. My sister doesn’t have any, me neither, I have a brother who may have them as he just turned 28… But she never told us “I want grandchildren”, she doesn’t comment. I mean, I think she accepted it. And more than anything, I think that she… I mean, this is my perspective, because I never asked personally, I think it was hard for her. Apart from raising her own children, she basically raised her brothers too, because she was the older sister, they lived in great poverty. She was a mother before becoming a mom, really, so she it was exhausting for her. She never told us: “You must be mothers,” as for her it was an experience that didn’t… I don’t think it was that wonderful. I think. Because more, like me… my husband is much older than me, and she told me to be careful: “Maybe you should not have children”, but because he is much older than me. “What will you do if you’ll be a widow? Will you be left on your own, all all that”. She tried to advise me before having a child. I mean, don’t have any. But I think that’s also the reason why I don’t have that maternal instinct. Because she never told us: “To be a woman you must have children”.»
ROSI: «Aunties.»
FU YU: «Freedom. I don’t know…»
ROSI: «I don’t know… Friends.»
FU YU: «I think it’s a decision. It’s neither good nor bad. I mean, it’s a decision, and everyone can choose.»

Yo dije, yo no quiero tener hijos.
Digo no. – “¿Y cuántos hijos va a tener?” – “Ninguno”.
No quiero cambiar mi vida.»
Entonces ella me dijo, tenlas cuidado. O sea, no tengas.
FU YU: «Libertad. No sé…»
ROSI: «No sé, es como… Tías. Amigas.»
