RAFAEL: «I think it’s the feminist movement that actually started here, in Argentina, and it’s really strong and it started for the horrible things that happened, a rape, the murder of a young girl. But it came from that, from that terrible thing that happened and that’s when the “Ni Una Menos” movement appeared, which is a movement that brings together a lot of things, women, and it unites… both women and men in the fight against all this, against patriarchy and against everything that we’ve been taught is supposedly right and what’s wrong.
Re-evaluating things, it helps me and other people too, to rethink myself as a man and the position that one needs to take from there. It’s a really genuine movement and it resonates with a lot of people. I think it’s fabulous, I mean, it’s beautiful. It’s the fight of these young women and we need to support it. And well, it’s also going to make us look at ourselves and see what we used to think was right or normal are actually the foundations we need to break and the expectations we need to shatter. Because there were so many things that were wrong, it’s a matter of how we were raised in this macho society where men have so much freedom while so many things happen and women are judged on absolutely everything. I think it’s good that… to support it, that… there’s still a long way to go and it’s not just about women not being killed anymore, there’s rape and those terrible things, but on top of that there are a whole lot of issues that have come up as a result of that, like the position of women in the workplace, getting paid less, everything about them being questioned, from the way they dress to what they say, whereas men’s opinions are always overvalued.»
ROBERTA: «For sure.»
RAFAEL: «This guy is much more feminist than before, I’d say and it’s not just about not saying something outrageous, I mean, saying something to a woman is obviously completely wrong, but it’s not just that, there are plenty of other things where we, I saw myself acting macho too in a lot of ways and I’ve been trying to change, basically.»
ROBERTA: «And of course, fatherhood, was there a point in your life where you thought… now is the time to have a child?»
RAFAEL: «No, it never really crossed my mind because the relationships I had never got to that stage, and but well, it’s everyone’s own decision, whether they want to or not, and you have to take it with the responsibility that it deserves, I think it’s totally respectable. Bringing a child into the world is a decision extremely… complicated and you have to be responsible when you make it, you need to be present for that child. So… you can’t just treat it as just another thing, like, I’m having a kid, what do I know. So you need to be there, the day I decide to be a father, if that happens, I want to be there, and I want to be there as much as I can, supporting my partner and the child I may have.»
ROBERTA: «But in your family, at work, didn’t people ask you questions about that?»
RAFAEL: «There’s this thing where I’m over thirty and I don’t have kids, there’s always that issue because of those expectations we’ve been talking about, in your twenties you travel, in your thirties you’re supposed to be almost married, and by nearly forty you have to have two kids, a steady job, and be happy, and it’s just not like that. It’s good when it’s a genuine decision and when it comes from love, not because society tells you that you have to do this or that, right, I’m in my thirties, if I don’t have kids now because later…»
ROBERTA: «And when you see a baby, what goes through your mind? Does it make you feel soft?»
RAFAEL: «No, I don’t mean, it’s not that I like all kids, I do like them, but, you know, I’m not going to say, I really want to have a child, it’ll happen for me when I’m truly with someone where the decision is mutual and I’m fully committed to being all in on that project, right now I have another project in mind and it doesn’t fit into the equation, a child doesn’t fit into the plan I have right now, but it’s not because I’m a man, you know, it’s because I’m a person, any person could feel the same way, woman or man, it’s all the same. I don’t know.»
ROBERTA: «Don’t you have friends who’ve had kids who tell you, it’s amazing, why don’t you do it?»
RAFAEL: «I have friends who had children, who have families, who are happy and they’re happy in their own way, but well, it just hasn’t happened for me. Then I have other friends who have kids and… the relationship falls apart soon after and well, you have to rethink that, you have to make that decision, it’s not a small thing. I don’t know.»

No sé.»
No sé.»
