Marcel, a separated German man and father of two, reflects on parenthood within marriage as a natural condition for him and also facilitated by favourable socio-economic conditions. He questions why people choose not to have children, leaving aside the prejudices that often accompany this choice.

MARCEL: «At first, I’m always very nervous, but I know that after 2-3 minutes I calm down again and I am relaxed. Let’s start with the nervous part. I know that from myself, that’s normal.
Yes, I’m Marcel, I am 42 years old now. I live in the area, so near Bonn. And I’m here today for a day trip, because I wanted to take some photos. And now, I have been approached by you, asking me whether I would like to be interviewed. So, that’s why I’m sitting here and that’s why we’re doing this now. I have two children, I am currently separated, my children are 8 and 12 years old. And the little one is autistic. So far all is normal.
The decision to have children… It is a good question, whether it just happens,or whether you are overwhelmed by it, or you participate in the choice or whether you accept it as it is. I do not think that even if you actively decide,
that then children will automatically come, we always have the biological factor playing in the background. But the exciting thing is actually the extent to which we actually decide for ourselves, as individuals, whether we want to have children or to what extent biology, evolution automatically does it for us. So, that’s certainly an exciting approach, but when two people meet, and that works in some way, and both life plans point in the same direction, then it’s very likely for me, that children will arrive, unless both or one of them are firmly against having them. Of course, it is more difficult if someone firmly oppose to having them, in that case very likely this relationship will be failing. Evolution is very simple.»
VALENTINA:«Was it clear that you both wanted children?»
MARCEL: «Of course, very traditionally in a way or another, and at some point, in marriage, children simply are part of it and nothing played against it in our society or in our environment: we are all adults with social security,
we have no wars to fear, and so to speak, nothing was really against it. That’s why this so unproblematic in the first and second world but also in the third world, it is natural to have children.»
VALENTINA: «And what do you think about men who say they won’t have children?»
MARCEL: «In the best case, these are simply very honest, because there is no prejudice in itself, just because you’re against having children, they might be doing it just to have fun in life. Or it could be that they think much further, that’s may be what people do. That’s just a thought, it doesn’t have to be correct, but it’s a thought and that’s what you have to question: Why doesn’t he want that, what’s the reason behind it? A blanket judgment is relatively easy to make, just as much as a curt statement: “I don’t want a child.”»
VALENTINA: «Do you think the same about women?»
MARCEL: «Of course, of course. Surely there are women who may be afraid of responsibility, who do not abuse their body for this purpose, because it’s a very extreme experience into a woman’s life. This is completely unquestionable. But then maybe socialization, considere the pros and cons of a career, from my point of view, these would be poor reasons, this motivation is low for me.There are complex multi-layered reasons for deciding for and against and the simple statement in itself is not enough, the complete biography is always included.»
VALENTINA: «What do you think would be different if you didn’t have children?»
MARCEL: «I can’t answer the question, because we don’t know. We can’t decide because the fact is I have children and I love them and we share responsibility with my partner on a weekly basis. So, I jave them every other week, so for a week I’m the father, next week they stay with Steffi, the mother, quite normal. I don’t know what it would be because, first, I don’t have the choice and secondly, how was I supposed to know I can’t decide kids or not. I have them. Period. And that’s what I’m here for and I vouch for that, so to speak, to be at least an acceptable father. Whether I will be good, we’ll only know that later. Only time will tell.»

So also soweit alles ganz normal.
VALENTINA: «Was glaubst du wäre anders wenn du keine Kinder hättest?»
