Ines is a young German feminist with very clear ideas: in her testimony, she expresses the reasons that led her to make the choice of not having children and discusses important issues such as overcoming the romantic view on childbirth, the possibility of acting motherhood outside of biological functions and the racist matrix of the pronatalist propaganda of the far-right parties in Germany.

INES: «I would like to discuss about my personal decision, first. I am 29 years old, I actually find this the best age to have children, but I decided a few years ago, that I don’t want children, I’ve always felt… I’ve always felt uneasy around the subject of being a mother myself and at the same time it felt like it had to be. That’s what’s expected from society, from family, everyone. And then, over time, I started to identify myself as a feminist and I decided, no, I don’t have to, this is for me a feminist practice, I choose not to do that. I decide what happens to my body, and I decide that pregnancy and birth are not what’s going to happen to my body. And… Yes, and so in my context, I’m lucky that my mother, of her own accord, before I had to tell her that, she told me, “Grandkids, I don’t really need them.” That’s good, because I don’t want any children at all. So, that was clarified, as my mother is also a feminist. Maybe one who doesn’t call herself as such, but who have spent her life practicing feminism. Right.
And then in the last 2 years, I very often experienced, especially in the medical field, cases of doctors who did not respect this, at all, especially when you’re so young. Yeah… You always have to listen to their opinion but yours is not taken seriously, not recognized as a decision and at the same time it’s an issue that simply comes up. So, even if it’s out of context, not even at the gynecologist, but simply with a general practitioner, I get asked as if this has something to do with that although I’m there for something else. And it was like this… It’s a very personal topic it belongs to your private sphere , which is then invaded and then… it is no accepted when you say, no , that’s my choice. I wonder why am I being asked in the first place if it is clear what my answer must be.
So, my father is not part of my life, he knows nothing about it, as I’m not talking to him.
So, in the German context, yes, that’s true of course my environment is feminist, I have a lot of girlfriends, who have decided not to have children and there’s not much… We don’t care, that’s what we agree on. But what I observe in Germany, even with the onset right-wing populism, which is pretty strong, the racist component coming in and I think that’s terrible because… The AFD, the new far-right populist party, that have been around since 2015 is becoming more and more popular, they have spread this idea that we Germans should make more children, because in Germany, we have a low birth rate and we need children, too many old people compared with the younger generations. And that’s why we actually would need immigration, from a neutral point of view, immigration brings people who want children, or that can bring children in any way. And German women are having fewer children, because we are very disadvantaged when we decide to become mothers. And yes, and now for the right we should do it ourselves, we must have children ourselves because they’re racist and only want white children. So, if a migrant woman has five children, then it’s really considered a problem and at the same time they say that we need more children and that we should all have children. So, to German women, whoever this is supposed to be, it is said you need to have children, but if your skin color is not right then this wouldn’t fit, then please don’t have any children, which is deeply racist. I think it’s an issue which isn’t much talked about much, also…
In general, I think that in Germany is not an issue… this is a feminist issue or what role does it play within feminism? I think clearly, the physical experience of pregnancy and childbirth was an important part of my decision, not the only one, but a part of it, because we often don’t even talk about the dangers involved with pregnancy and childbirth for people who give birth. So, I think pregnancy and childbirth are very romanticized or then again so pathologized. So, either it becomes like this, as a wonderful experience and the body has to go through it, because you have a uterus, so do something with it or then again like this pregnancy is another condition, which goes in the direction of illness. So, you have to take special care of yourself, which is true, as a lot is changed with your body. And I also felt very strongly what pregnancy and birth do to your body, even before I made that decision. It’s not a decision that I simply made, I searched a lot about it and the dangers that come with it, especially for women, who don’t have such good access for medical care. And that’s contraception, who may or may not decide to be pregnant, but to whom it happens there. That’s exactly why… So, the question about menstruation… Having taken such a decision this is what happens, it’s not that every month I think I should have been pregnant by now. It happens naturally until menopause, that’s the way it is.
That is part of it. So, one thing that’s very important, is that when we talk about motherhood and parenting, we don’t always talk about biological motherhood, about getting pregnant yourself and having children. I think it’s very important even within a feminist practice, to see what other possibilities there are, to have children in your life, having maternal feelings for other beings, not just human children. And I think there is far too little talk.
I was here yesterday at the Feminist Futures Festival at a workshop and I was amazed about how many women or participants talked about it right away, about biological motherhood to have children. As feminists, we should think about, or it is worth thinking about what has patriarchy to do with motherhood? Patriarchy and capitalism want that we do that with our bodies, and that can be for us a feminist choice to say, No. I won’t let you do this with my body, but I can still have children in my life, or be in solidarity with mothers, who gave birth themselves and, of course, all the biological stuff to which a child is connected. But we can still support these women or support these people, especially if its not cis women but also transgender people who may want to experience parenthood and that’s so important. I think it takes more than one person to have a child, to raise and also to support a child. No woman should give birth alone, I think this is very important, also within feminism, to disengage from this traditional notion that if I have children, they are my own.»
Tedesco:
Also…
Genau deswegen…
