Hayet hosts Lunàdigas in the shade of an olive tree, a charitable symbol of her region in Tunisia and the meeting place of her association Sidi Bouzaintoun. In her testimony, Hayet recounts her journey as a woman who freely chose, and with the support of family members, not to have children and to devote herself to protecting the large trees in her area. Although the topic of non-motherhood is always taboo, in her area, in Ghardimaou, women move with greater freedom than in Jendouba. For her grandmother, Lunàdigas women are courageous women: “nisaa w nouss” meaning “a woman and a half”.

HAYET: «Marhbabiku, you are welcome at my home in Sidi Bouzaitoun. Sidi Bouzaitoun is our association, this is the headquarters of our association. We come here to benefit from this tree, the olive tree, the symbol of my region, where I live. Marhaban bik – Welcome!
Let me tell you a little bit about my area, about me, my association. I was born here, a kilometer from here, on my grandparents’ small farm. I really liked this place, I was very attached to my grandparents, especially my grandfather. I did a lot of things with him, he taught me how to ride a horse he made me learn even hunting. My father had to emigrate to France and I spent most of my childhood with my grandmother and my aunts. Of course, I had my father and mother, but I consider them like my second family, my grandmother is my first family. I learned everything: I looked after the sheep, the olives… I did everything with my grandparents. I studied at a school in this area about 4 kilometers from here and I had to cross the Oued to get to and from school.
When I was 10, they moved me to the city, but I was still attached to this place, then I went to Tunis to complete my studies. I studied history and through history I liked this area even more I wanted to value it.
In 2009, after a Master’s degree in history, I studied as a naturalist guide and I entered civil society. With nature guide training, I learned a lot about plants and then I decided to protect the old trees in the area. It was my relationship with Sidi Bouzeitoun that, not just for me, is the ” murābit ” (sacred place) of women, where more women come than men. There are other murābits, mixed places but it’s mainly for women, we come here in spring, we come here in autumn to have a party, a small festival, women and girls, we do the meals, we sing, we do a lot of things. So, we take the blessing of this tree to pass before exams. It stayed with me.
My grandmother told me, if you have any problems you go to the” eshis ” in Sidi Buzaitoun, you stay there and you tell your story and then you feel good. In my experience, it’s helped me a lot, I don’t know if it’s a psychological question, but I come here every time that I’m in trouble. I also come without problems: I like to bring people and my friends here, to bring them to this place. Then, as I was saying, the idea of creating this association, the Association for the Protection of secular trees, but then it was also something else, there I entered civil society, I got in touch with other women, but in the association there are also men. It’s not just a women’s association, it involves a lot of people. We work for the good of this region, as we think about it.
Going back to the question: why I decided not having children in my life. Personally, I really like children, but at the age of five or six, I was with my friends, there were plenty of girls with me and my grandmother asked me, always the same question, ” Who do you want to be when you grow up? Which profession do you prefer?” And also “How many children are you going to have?” Some said two, three, four… I don’t know… when she came to me, I said: “I don’t want to have children!” “Why?” “There are enough here!” There are a lot of kids around me, why do I need to add more?
And the idea grew although I was neglecting it, I didn’t think about having children and it’s not because that they will block my life or they take away my freedom, but… it was spontaneous and natural for me to say, ok, if I want to have children, there are plenty of children in my family. of course there were children. There’s my cousin whom I consider almost a daughter, she is very close to me.
In addition, my life as a woman living a rural area, who comes from a region a little… Ghardimaou is a very conservative area. In Ghardimaou, women are allowed to be in cafes, until now. Never. So, these topics, marriage, children… are taboo subjects. My life, I decided not to live it like the others, to make my life the way I want. My father gave me this strength, he said to me: ok.
At 19, the first people came to ask my hand to my father and then he said, “See?” “She’s still young, she’s studying!” And he said, “If you get engaged now, you’re never going to continue your studies. You have to discover the world, your life, you have to study!” When I finished my studies, I had a problem with unemployment, I came back here in a mountain area, and I thought what would I do here? I need to find something else.
Well, I like agriculture, nature, I work with my grandmother in her garden, we have the olive trees, we make olive oil at home and many other things. But that’s not enough, you have to have something to do.
I think if I got married at 25 now I’m almost 37 years old, I still have a PhD to do that I will end up at 40, so it’s not worth it to have children! It was natural, it happened like that, there have been no problems in my family they accepted my decision. Therefore, I can travel, I can do my activities, I can spend the night outside, there is no child waiting for me at home whom I am responsible for. If I had children I should have been responsible for them. And I see, in my environment, the women here who work in agriculture, they go out at 5 in the morning and return at 6 o’clock in the evening. Meanwhile, where are the children? We don’t know where they are, what they’re doing, they start smoking at 8-9 years old. I’m talking about the forest environment, from the mountain environment, there is no time for these children. If I want to have a child I have to be responsible for it. Personally, I don’t think that I want to be responsible, I chose another path.»
SUSI: «Hayet, are there other women in the area who decided not to have children?»
HAYET: «Yes, there are other women in the area, I know them personally, they are older than me. In preparation for your visit I contacted them, I know a family of 4 women who have no children. The youngest would have been very happy to come to talk about why she chose this life. Unfortunately, at the last minute I contacted her to get her to come but she said it was because of her uncle that she couldn’t be there, he was the one who forced her not to tell about her experience.
So, there are women who have taken this responsibility, this responsibility prevented them to make a family or to get married, getting married or having children. There are also women who biologically cannot have children. Generally speaking here, yesterday, we went to Jendouba and I listened to a lot of testimonials and I was impressed by these stories, of women who are not accepted by society. Personally, in Ghardimaou, it’s normal, provided that the woman succeeds to convince her entourage that she decided that. I told the last woman who spoke ” You’ve been able to live your whole life without having children and you couldn’t convince your uncle to talk about your experience?” It’s about how to take a stand and defend that decision.
The film Lunàdigas for me has been very innovative. It’s very beautiful, I liked it very much. I watched it alone the first time, after I watched it with my mother and my grandmother. I was surprised by the reaction of my grandmother, she didn’t understand, I passed the message to her. Finally, she said it was “Nisaa w nouss”, for her, it was women who decided to do something in their lives, to fight for it, so for her, they deserve respect.
And then I saw it with young women of the Rayhana association and young women from all over the region, and I was impressed by their reactions. This documentary was really something innovative, it impressed me a lot, I liked it. I’ve seen it three times and I think I’ll watch it again, with my friends and my sister, if she comes back. I really liked this movie, it’s very good.»
SUSI: «Why?»
HAYET: «Because it offered the experience through many testimonials full of women who have decided not to have children, each in her own way, but in fact each had the courage to talk about herself, to share their experience with lots of other people who will watch them. Also, the way to shoot the film I really liked it, it’s not boring. I really liked the music, this woman who arrives, like an angel, who speaks and then we move on… It is very light and innovative. I really liked the music, also the characters of these women there who shared their experiences with us.»
SUSI: «As far as you are concerned, what was your experience?»
HAYET: «As far as I am concerned, I think I’m part of a category of women who decided not to have children, but who have other missions in their lives. So for me it wasn’t… Like I said, I liked the movie, how it was filmed, the music, the testimonies. But was I influenced by these women? I think it’s normal, because I share these things, I don’t have a problem talking about it, with my friends or with anyone else who asks me.
If I am asked whether I will have children I say no, very simple, because I don’t feel that this is my mission in the life to have children, or something else. So, among many other missions I have already chosen other things to do. It is a choice.
Like I said, I saw the movie with my mother and grandmother I was impressed by my grandmother’s reaction after watching the movie we each discussed what we thought, and my grandmother said: Nisaa w nouss which means a capable woman. If we were to translate, we would say a woman and a half, not just a woman: a woman and another half next to her. So a capable, brave woman who deserves all the respect.
Thinking about who to leave my possessions, my inheritance? I have never really thought about it. In my family, things pass like this. For example, when my grandfather died we should have shared his legacy, but I see that there is no one who takes care of this legacy. It’s a question that will come, I might think about entrusting something. Just like a passing… My grandfather left me a necklace that it was inherited by six generations to get to me. I will entrust it to Belsam, my cousin; I think she is going to be a strong woman like me. Yes, I really think I’ll leave it to Belsam. The most interesting thing is that I will entrust it to her, and she’ll have to hand it over to a person, to a woman or a man someone in our family who’s going to take care of it. I didn’t think of anything else to leave, except for this necklace, because my grandfather inherited it, it has gone through many generations to get to me and I don’t want to let it go.»
SUSI: «Where did this necklace come from? What did your grandfather tell you when he left you this necklace?»
HAYET: «When he left me the necklace, my grandfather and me were very close, he’s the one who taught me how to travel. He said: “No problem, you can travel! If you want to go somewhere, you can do it. It’s just a question to have confidence in yourself”. That necklace is still there, it’s in a sacred room where there are all the memories of my grandfather. Every once in a while, I would go in with him, and once he told me: “Hayet, when I die, this is yours. It’s not your job to wear it or sell it, but to take care of her, you have to protect her”.
I said it was good but I thought: “But why?” And he said: “I inherited it from my mother”. And she had inherited it too… I forgot it, but it is handmade, there are symbols in it, so far, I haven’t deciphered them, but he said to me: “it’s the honor of our family”. For him, this is the honor of our family and it’s been with me so far, I keep it well… This is… It is the only thing and one day I’m going to hand it over to Belsam. I think for him the honour of the family was not in genetic transmission to keep the family name alive. For my grandfather the honor of the family is not related to offspring, but it was related to that necklace there.
In my grandfather’s family between sons and daughters, we are 127 people, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Yes. My grandfather has two sons and five daughters, and adopted four. Someone who had remained orphans parents who died and left four children and my grandfather adopted them. They got married and had children. A big family! Sometimes I forget a name!»
Francese:
