GRACE: «My name is Grace, I live in Chorrera, I’m from Panama. I have two children, born within the marriage, I am now a widow, my husband died for COVID-19. My children were born within the marriage and they were done with love and planned.
In Panama? Well, most women have children very soon. I didn’t, I had them when I was 24, already married to my love. Were they planned? Well, most Panamanians have them without planning, but I did, because at home that’s what they taught me. Getting married, having a stable partner, a stability, and the kids live with mom and dad. That’s what they taught me. I was born into a marriage, and that’s what I wanted to teach to my children. But because their father died then I came back single.
My sisters got married and they both got divorced and remarried, some with children and some without. And I don’t call it feminism, it’s about being independent women. Women are very independent, they have their home, their car, their work.
Women in Panama have emancipated themselves spectacularly. Many women are professionals, independent. They do not depend on men, at least most women, that’s why it’s not easy for those who are left alone with their children. Exactly. That is, women who are left alone with her children, must stand up and be independent. because they are left alone with their children, due to unplanned pregnancies.»
