Gloria, an Argentine journalist and cat lover, explains that she made a conscious choice not to have children. She argues that a woman can look after others in many ways without being a mother, and encourages other “lunàdigas” to embrace their choice with peace of mind.

ROBERTA: «Hi Gloria.»
GLORIA: «Hi!»
ROBERTA: «I’m Roberta, we were talking about children, we were talking about Lunàdigas and as we said earlier, I asked you if it’s hard to be a lunàdiga. Is it hard?»
GLORIA: «No, it’s not hard. Only, some people look at you strangely and they ask you: “Why don’t you have any children? What happened to you, are you sick? Did something happen to you?” No, I answer. I have not had children because I never had the desire to be a mother. And I think it’s very serious. A woman once told me: “Children just come. They are not planned”. Well, I’ve planned my whole life my not being a mother and it’s not a problem for me, it’s a choice.
Some people are a little selfish. Society expects that children respond to many functions: they are raised, supported, you pay for school and university, then as parents get older, they need to take care of them. I’ve never desired having children and it was an honest decision.
For a while, I was in therapy with a psychologist and I asked: “I don’t want to have children, is that normal? Because many of my friends have children and they ask me when I’m going to have them.
And I say: “Never, because I don’t feel like it”. So, in therapy I talked a lot about this with my psychologist and I put my mind at rest. And… nothing… here I am, with my cats, my daughter is the cat. Anyway, it was a decision.
I am a journalist; I travel the world for work but if I had felt the desire to be a mother, I would have gone to work around the world with my child. It’s not an excuse. I’m not a mother simply because I never wanted to be.»
ROBERTA: «Speaking of cats, do some people ask you, if you consider your cats your children?»
GLORIA: «Yes.»
ROBERTA: «What do you think about it?»
GLORIA: «Cats are a love bond, I like cats… but it’s not the same as having children. I mean, I don’t have kids, but I think it’s not like having a cat. You do take care of them and all, but you have less responsibilities, it is easier with cats. They don’t go to college, school, kindergarten. I don’t know… cats live with you, give you affection, but I don’t think you can compare it with having a child.
The only time I was in a relationship similar to being a mother was with a guy from Senegal in Barcelona, I was his guardian for three years. The boy and I used to train in the same gym, he had the opportunity to play in a team, but had no adult to act as his guardian in Spain. So, I agreed to do this, I did it so he could play in the team having someone legally responsible. I made a written agreement with his parents and I made a commitment to be responsible for the child for three years, until he turned 18. We laughed when he called me “my mother”, but this was the closest relationship to the role of a mother that I have ever had, but he has his mother and his father. I was only responsible for him because he needed it legally. And it wasn’t a complicated experience for me, but I never wanted to be a mother. It’s a decision not to be a mother.»
ROBERTA: «And when did you make that decision?»
GLORIA: «I think it’s always been there, all my life. But when I married my first husband, he was a pediatrician, with seven siblings, a very large family, all had children and everything was like… like having to explain to him why I didn’t want to have children. That is, explain it to a pediatrician, who really likes children and who has many brothers. At that moment, I seriously thought about it, and I said no, because I felt like it was an obligation. I should have done something out of obligation and it didn’t seem right to me do something out of obligation. And that’s it… That’s the story.»
ROBERTA: «What would you like to say to the other lunàdigas in the world?»
GLORIA: «They should feel absolutely free not to have children. It’s not a problem not to have them, it’s a choice. It’s all right, that’s a very sincere choice.»
ROBERTA: «All right.»
GLORIA: «One more thing, one is the mother of many people without being a mother: husbands, brothers, friends… A woman is a mother in many ways, isn’t she? She heals, protects, helps, right? She doesn’t necessarily have to be a real mother.»
Español:
ROBERTA: «Hola Gloria.»
GLORIA: «Hola!»
Y buen, nada…
Cuida, protege, ayuda, ¿no?
