Federico, a musician from Porto Torres, recounts how the birth of his daughter changed his life, making him more aware and determined. Fatherhood prompted him to promote Turritano language in his art and give new meaning to his career. Finally, he reflects on the contemporary difficulties that hinder the creation of new families in Sardinia.

FEDERICO: «My name is Federico Marras, I’m forty-one, I was born in Sassari but I grew up in Porto Torres. They baptized me at the sea, in Balai, as I use to say. I became a father at about thirty, my daughter Adelasia is now ten years old. It wasn’t something I thought through, it just happened. I never over think, I live my life day by day and the same goes for my daughter: it has not been planned, she just arrived, and it’s the most beautiful thing that has ever happened to me to this day.
I’ve always wanted a daughter, to build a family, marry, because I come from a family that has been through a lot, and so I’ve always tried, somehow, to make up for my origins, trying to create a relationship with my daughter that was more important, more concrete. Let’s say I didn’t feel like dying a “vagiano”, a bachelor. I’ve always thought about starting a family, to have a daughter. I can say that there was a before and an after, everything has changed since my daughter was born. It almost feels like I’m no longer the same person, that this person that I was before becoming a father it’s someone I remember, a kid, but it isn’t me. Parenting really has changed me deeply.
And my work has also changed a lot since my daughter was born, because I focused better what I had to do. I work in show business, I make music, I attend a dance school. In short, I work in a sector that it is not exactly stable, on the contrary, it changes, it goes through ups and downs, with many precarious moments. However, unlike many others, with the arrival of my daughter I did not give up, and even if this job is, how to say, a bit in the air, she gave me even more strength to keep doing it.
Then, there were so many other changes, one over all the language. Until ten years ago, I wrote in Italian, and earlier even in English. When my daughter arrived, I understood that the most important dimension to tell others is that of the heart, that of the language of the parents, of our language. Because certain stories, certain thoughts, can only be expressed with our language. There is no other way to do it. And so I started to study it, this language, that I’ve always heard and talked about on the street ever since I was a little boy. but always a little by ear, let’s say. I tried to study it, to deepen it, and to use it in my compositions, so much so that in 2020 or 2021 I released a record of songs in Turritano, which has had quite a few accolades, always locally, I haven’t been invited to Hollywood yet. In Sorso, yes, however, and also in Gallura. In Sardinia, in short. To put it bluntly, even in Italy. Although it’s strange to think so, our Italian cousins they love this regional language thing, dialects as they call them. That then the difference between a language and a dialect is if there’s an army behind it, this is a quote. Language is something institutional, something that goes hand in hand with power, with politics, with the States. Instead, dialects belong to the people, to the culture, and then through the centuries they became Italy, France, or other. But first of all, there were the popular communities who spoke their own languages.
Let’s clarify: the language I speak is “turritano”, which is the best way to call it. Turritano is the language system that blend together Sassarese, the portotorrese, sorsese and stintinese, and it’s also spoken in the Nurra. Each of these cities call its own language sorsese, portotorrese, sassarese, but all together they are called “turritano”. In Turritano, to define a person who does not have children, there’s a word I’ve already used, and that is “vagianu”. The “vagianu”, or “vagiana”, is a woman or a man who hasn’t had children, who didn’t get married, who didn’t start a family.
In my family, they all had children, except my dad. My father has no children, a little weird thing to say, but it’s true. I have two fathers: one who brought me into this world, who speaks Logudorese, with whom I hang out with and love, and then another one, the one that raised me and who speaks this language. My native language teacher, from Porto Torres. He married my mother after my birth, and they didn’t have children together, so he acted as a father to me, despite being ‘vagiano’, because of the woman who he married forty years ago, my mother. So, you can raise children even being a “vagianu”, so to speak. The word is this, “vagiano”.
Children are gifts, they are a blessing. I think there are moments where it’s easier to have these gifts, and other times when instead it’s not possible. Moments determined by wealth, by hunger and poverty.
Sardinia has many problems, today people fail to see the future well, they lack perspective. And so they’re afraid to bring children into the world, and for a good reason. But I think that with fewer children, there is more misery. In Sardinia, we pay dearly for this, because there is no work, for all the problems that there are, it’s always a land that… has been robbed by whoever passed by, that’s our story. Then, there was a time, when the less you had, the more children you had. That is, it was the poor who had children, because the children were laborers, they worked since they were little. Now, that work is more and more… digital, today they are increasingly… ephemeral, let’s say. Manual labor is no longer needed, you no longer need for children who at the age of 12 help out in the vegetable garden, or help out at home, who bring money because you are always in need for money. Today, you are better alone, you spend less. Alone is better, because apart from the children there are fewer families, relations between men and women have changed a lot, and are increasingly difficult and problematic. I think these difficulties stem from this very fear that has taken all of us, about life, about work, or whatever will happen in the future, because we haven’t got a clue. And so we freeze, we wither, taken by this fear, and we think that being alone may be the right way to get by.»
Turritano:
FEDERICO: «Eu mi ciamu Federico Marras, v’aggiu quarantun’anni, soggu nadu in Sassuri ma soggu crisciddu in Porthu Torra, m’hani battisgiaddu in Balai, cumenti diggu sempri eu. E m’è tuccaddu dibintà babbu candu v’abia trenta trentun’anni, me figliora, Adelasia v’ha dezz’anni.
Eu finz’a dezz’anni fa cumpunìa in italianu, prima ancora in ingresu. Inveci li dialetti sighini chissi chi so li populi, sighini chissi chi so li culthuri, chi poi i l’anni, andendi, i li seculi, so dibintaddi l’Italia, la Franza , lu chi voi, ma prima di tutto, prima ancora, v’erani li comunidai populari chi fabiddavani li linghi d’eddi propri.
In casa hani fattu tutti figliori, dimmu cussì, ma no babbu meu.
Li pizzinni chi nascini so rigali, so doni. E tandu in Sardhigna chisthu lu paghemmu caru, parchì no v’è trabagliu, pa tutti li prublemi chi vi so, è una terra chi è sempri rapinada da tutti li chi passani, i l’isthoria è sempri isthaddu cussì.
A la sola è megliu ancora, parchì prima ancora di li figliori chi no vi so, no vi so li famiri, no vi so li rapporthi fra la femina i lu masciu, fra l’ommu i la femina, chi so sempri più diffiziri e ipasimaddi propriu.
