Daniela T., an architect from Buenos Aires, reflects on how her family history – on both her mother’s and father’s side – has influenced her status as a childfree woman, a status also shared by her sister and cousins. In her testimony, Daniela also offers insight into the situation of childfree women and men in contemporary Argentina.

DANIELA T: «Great! This is for one person, it’s not your typical mate, but I like it this small. Delicious!
My name is Daniela, Daniela Trapé, I am 55 years old and I live here in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Well, I’m an architect and it’s a pleasure being here with you.
Since I was a little girl, I knew I wouldn’t want children. I remember once I dreamt that I had a baby, a very tiny one, who told me: “You won’t have children”. So… even when I played, I was thinking I never had the role of mother or father, but only someone who came into the picture where everyone was playing pretending to be dads, moms, etc., and I was nothing. And there I realized that I wasn’t going to have children. At that time, I didn’t think why. I was sorry but I didn’t mind. I was like a person who came in, assembled everything… Well, I think afterwards my profession has been also this, going to a place where people live and set up their space. I didn’t care for it, that is, I think that as a child I knew I would be a professional who would dedicate herself to others, let’s say.
Then, growing up, I started wondering why I hadn’t had any children. My sister didn’t have kids either, neither my cousins and I started asking my dad what his birth had been like, if… I started researching and asking what had happened. And I feel that… I don’t know if the desire to have children is passed down from generation to generation. I think sometimes they were accidents.
In fact, I think this has influenced also my… my unconscious decision, right? In addition to seeing my mother who suffered for us for no reason. Though… that was… I think that was the model that I didn’t want to be.
Now, at 55, I think I’m… I’m going through a phase, a new phase which… I think all these years it’s as if I’ve built absolutely… that need for a child or being a mother. It’s like I never thought about it. Not only that, but not even marrying someone, or living with someone.
I’m… I mean, the question of children, already as a girl, I knew it was a no! Then, over time, I realized that it wasn’t even necessary to live with someone, that you can live the life you want to live. Sometimes, you just… set some goals that are really to satisfy the desires of another. So, today I don’t even want to fulfill that desire to have to live with someone. I started to find out that living alone and being with myself is great.
To tell you the truth, I have a friend without children too and she says, “I’m a universal mother”. Because… I never even needed to have a pet or anything that… take care of someone… It’s not like… It’s natural. I don’t need to have someone or something to be with or to assist. It’s like in general, one is made in a certain way, not because one has children or not. I’m getting tangled up.
In Bahia Blanca, when we were little girls, we had two single women as neighbours who took care of their mother. And opposite there were two unmarried men who took care of their parents as well. So, those were the singles in the neighbourhood and they were regarded differently, as if they were weird. Maybe seeing that too, when I was 20. I said: “I can’t stay here. because I’d be the odd one out”. So… I left.
Well, Buenos Aires is different. Today, there is an array of ways of living, everyone lives as they please. And by itself, I think even judging or… is rather within your closer circles. I’m not going to go somewhere where there are all families because I don’t belong in that environment. It seems barbaric to me; I admire the people who fill fulfilled with having kids and all the rest. The truth is that I think it’s great because I know people like that, but it wasn’t my thing… it wasn’t the life I wanted or maybe sometimes I even think that… it may have been the fear of not being able to face such a responsibility, which is that to give birth to a child. Similarly, I don’t regret it at all today and I see that there are ways that you can… I mean, I don’t regret it at all.
“Spinster” is an ancient word to call people who have no children or are alone, who didn’t get married, let’s say. You know? But no, I don’t know any specific words used now. One would say, I’m alone. And what I’m seeing now, looking to the future, is that some people seem to feel the need, but it is the need of others to be identified as something, alone, accompanied, married…
Now I’m also noticing something about… not to start being called a grandmother. It’s very normal in Argentina to call elder people grandma or grandpa. There are TV shows, on TV, where they say, “The grandparents…” It’s awful that this is starting to happen, to be identified with something you’ve never been, nor will you ever be. So, this is something now that I’m paying attention to.
Here in Argentina, thinking about men without children, there are two types. The one who seems to have some kind of problems, and then there is the one who just goes after everyone, I believe he wouldn’t even know if they have children or not because… Instead, the woman, you can see that every day here, you don’t judge so much women who have no children. And I think women don’t care that much anymore. No… This has changed over the years. And I think we live today, I’m happy with the moment we live now, at last in my country… because in the world there are many forms and cultures that, well… I like where I live and the way I live, because I’m free.
Some time ago after… before the pandemic, I wanted to have a familiar constellation. So, the woman who did it to me she said: “Here I see something… a birth or a child or something like that between you and your mother”. My mother was always careful that we wouldn’t get pregnant, be careful, be careful… The only concern was not getting pregnant and in fact we never got pregnant, not even by accident. Once my mother died, I asked Dad. “Dad” – I told him – “do we have secrets”? Ah, because the woman told me: “There are families who have family secrets, right?” So, I said: “Dad, do we have family secrets”? And he says to me: “Yes, how can we not have any”? And I froze because my mom had always told us that she had gotten married, that she had had… she had me, then my sister and I never knew anything. And there my father told me that before me, she had had an abortion. And it was shocking to me, because I said two things to myself: first, poor mom, who has never been able to say it. Right? And secondly… how everything would have been different if we shared the truth? Instead of… hiding things that I know deep down that… she was hurt, because the will to abort sometimes I think it comes more from the man than from the woman.
At that time, it was a decision perhaps made due to the need to not be able to support another person, a child at that moment, but the decision is taken more by the man in this case. In fact, I say, culturally, sometimes what makes the difference is for a person to have decision-making independence. That’s why I always recommend to all young people to study, to think for themselves, which will set you free.
My sister, my only sister and I from my mother’s side, because actually the one who raised us was my mother and my father worked. A family where the mother was supporting everything and everybody, let’s say emotionally and also regarding for education, everything went through my mother. My father worked. The topic of sex education was really no topic, if it was it was simply saying: no! Watch out, it’s dangerous! Careful, otherwise… if you get pregnant young, you ruin your life. However, I think that was also the terror my sister and I had that this could happen to us.
And another thing I remembered, we were going to my grandmother from my father’s side, she was a woman widowed at 40, and we were little. My grandmother was always sitting there and telling us: Do not marry, study. Don’t get married, study. And I believed it and we spent a lot of time alone with her, and that’s what she told us, she told us… And I also wonder as my cousins, my aunt’s daughters on my father’s side, they don’t have kids either and they are 35 and 38. So, it’s pretty amazing that none of us have ever had children.
When I ask my father, if he had been loved he told me that my grandmother had accidentally gotten pregnant and that my grandmother’s brothers went to look for their father so that he would marry my grandmother. So, I started thinking to this theory that sometimes children were the result of a different desire than bringing a life into the world, right? So, I think it’s going to die out that idea of procreation, because actually, poor thing, my father was an accident in the end. Never mind. That’s the way it was. We wouldn’t talk about it with my mom, the only thing she could do was to take me to the doctor. But it wasn’t a topic that was talked about, no, no. It was just: “Careful. No”! But also, I left it there, I wouldn’t ask questions. Also, we were very obedient. So no, I had no rebellion, as well as why… She said no, it’s no, period. I wasn’t questioning anything.
Then my relations with the boys were: “No”! So no and well… It was kind of problematic. I remember once my boyfriend said to me: “Oh, no, because the proof of love”… Then it was called that, the proof of love and I thought: “The proof of love, what do I do?” And I went to talk to a priest, as surely, I wasn’t going to talk to my mom about the proof of love, but with the priest was even worst! He would ask me what I was doing with my boyfriend, whether he touched me or not, anything… a disaster, a disaster. So, for a long time, I didn’t know where to go, what to do other than this way of being out there… I didn’t go around asking to my mother at that time because I thought she was going to get angry or something. This is how it was, that whole thing was somewhat traumatic. Yes, it did.
Well, lately I’ve discovered a phrase, that inheritance is a miscalculation. So… I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I will try to make sure that the mistake be as little as possible and I’m thinking of women who… who will accompany me, and maybe giving to someone like Joshina, who is my assistant, Venezuelan. I always thought someone would show up and right now I feel it may be her. But I will try to make sure that the calculation is the most… And then when you die, things don’t matter anymore. It doesn’t really matter.»

Español:

DANIELA T: «Muy bien.
Entonces me fui.
No…
¿No? ¿No?
O sea…
¡No!
