Cristina and Pilar are two university biology lecturers in Colombia. Despite varying degrees of social and family pressure, both have consciously chosen not to have children and to devote their lives to their work. They reflect on the situation in Colombia with regard to birth rates and reproductive rights.

PILAR: «My name is Pilar Ximena. I am 49 years old. I currently work as a professor at the university. I am a microbiologist. I dedicate myself to being happy and I decided not to have children.»
CRISTINA: «Hello, my name is Cristina Lopez Gallego. I am 49 years old. I am a biologist, professor at a university. And since I was little, since I can remember I never wanted to have children and I have always felt good about it. There is a lot of diversity; Colombia is a big country, there are different cultures, so it depends a bit on the culture you are in. But in general, most people are Catholic. It is always considered that marrying and having children is “the normal thing”. What you have to do to be happy. When you say that you don’t want a husband or a partner, and you don’t want children, that is considered strange. It is considered abnormal. It is considered to be weird, that there’s something weird in them. People don’t necessarily treat you badly, but they do consider you outside the norm.»
PILAR: «Yes, it’s like a pattern. You have to be born, study, have children, be a common part of the commitment to exist on Earth. If you decide not to do it, people look at you strangely. Like: “What’s wrong? Why don’t you want kids?” It’s an usual thing. But I also feel that we are changing. So fortunately there are people who respect your decisions and see it as normal.»
CRISTINA: «My family is quite Catholic. They never pressured me directly. But they ask you questions like: “Hey, when are you getting married? When are you having children? Time passes, if you are already 25… 30 years old”… Then, very lovingly, they tell you: “Hey, what’s happening”? I’ve never felt a strong pressure, but is clear that there’s an expectation and you’re not fulfilling it, for most of my relatives. And my mother, she’s the only one of her siblings not to have any grandchildren. She’s the only one not a grandmother, so she feels bad because she doesn’t have grandchildren, unlike all her siblings. But she never complained to me directly.»
PILAR: «Yeah, in my case let’s say that my parents are more open-minded. There hadn’t been pressure. Although you know you must comply with the pattern: get educated, have children, study. After the doctorate: “What’s next”? You have to get married and have children. But the fact of not doing it, and seeing me happy, makes my family say: “You’re fine, we are with you”. In the academic world, most of my colleagues are married and have children. Cristina and I are the exception at the university, as we really decided not to have children. Many are still expecting to find a partner and have children. We are expecting to find a partner, maybe. But we live very well alone with the decision not to have children.»
CRISTINA: «Yeah. I think that our generation, from 40 years old to 50, is a bit more traditional, also in the academia, even though there are people with a more open mentality, they don’t judge you harshly, they try not to have prejudices. But younger generations, our students that are 20, 30 years old or younger, I feel it’s different. Women, men and non-binary people feel more comfortable with their choices, even if they are out of the ordinary. I also believe that the new generations are improving, although that social or family pressure still exists. I believe they’re improving, yes. I have never thought that I should leave a legacy after I won’t be here anymore, but I feel really proud of being a biologist, professor, and working in biodiversity’s protection. I have always thought my legacy is to teach, produce knowledge, try to save the planet. I feel that is an important contribution and it makes me very happy. And I hope it will be useful for the future.»
PILAR: «I feel that you leave a legacy every day. So, I try to be a good person, take care of myself, feel good, be good to myself, and be good to others, with the other beings that are on this planet with me. So, every night, when I go to sleep, I feel that I left a good legacy and I prepare to do the same the next day. Beyond the knowledge one generates in the profession, it’s about being a good person, having good energy, for yourself and for others.»
CRISTINA: «In Colombia, people used the word “spinster”, for a woman who never married, and who is already at an advanced age and has never wanted or been able to have a partner. It is a somewhat derogatory term. Normally, people who don’t marry are also the ones who don’t have children. There are also women that decide not to have kids even if they are married, but there isn’t a specific term. But usually they refer to you as: “Oh poor thing, she couldn’t have kids”. But there isn’t a specific term.»
PILAR: «There is something funny. When the fertile age approaches and you haven’t had children, and you didn’t got married, they tell you: “You missed the boat”. This is really funny, I mean, like… You lost your opportunity, it was your opportunity, you have lost the chance of having a child and getting married. But it’s true that there is something common: it’s implicit, that to have kids you must marry.»
CRISTINA: «Oh yes.»
PILAR: «The requirement then is to get married. Many times, one may want to have kids without getting married. But I have to get married, I must not miss the boat, because if I don’t get married, I’ll end up single without kids. There is that requirement to have a man by your side, to be also able to have kids.»
CRISTINA: «And when a woman has kids and doesn’t have a partner, she’s a single mother. But it’s different if you were married and your husband died or got divorced. That is not seen so badly. But if you decide to have kids and never getting married, you’re still a single mother but it’s different. It’s not approved as much. It’s like: “How dare you not marry and have kids”? It’s a bit disruptive.»
PILAR: «In Colombia, they prepare you to be a mother, they teach the basics of family planning in school. But since we are a Catholic country, abortion has always been seen as negative. Recently we have generated policies that allow it, and state entities perform abortions, just as they perform a free vasectomy, for example I believe we have improved, knowledge has given us options not to have children. Unfortunately, in communities, women with low education, what is expected is for them to be mothers. Very young women, 15 years old, are having children, because they don’t have access to planning methods. This happens a lot in Colombia, there are many young women who don’t plan. Others don’t plan because they haven’t been taught, or it’s considered a myth, especially in rural areas with less educational level.»

Español:

PILAR: «Me llamo Pilar Ergimena, tengo 49 años. Actualmente trabajo como profesora en la universidad. Soy microbióloga. Me dedico a ser feliz, y he decidido no tener hijos.»
CRISTINA: «Hola, yo me llamo Cristina Lopez Gallego.
¿Cuándo vas a tener hijos?”
Realmente decidimos no tener hijos.
