A collective narrative that challenges the notion of motherhood as an inevitable destiny, exploring genuine desires, ambivalence and conscious choices. The testimonies reveal the weight of social conditioning, judgements, stereotypes and expectations surrounding motherhood. This gives rise to a profound reflection on the freedom to choose one’s own path, redefining identity, emotional bonds and the meaning of life.

REBECA: «I’m Rebeca and I’ve been living in Sobrarbe for three years what I mean is that I feel proud… I feel like it was easier for me to live in the period in which I live, because up until 50 years ago women like me didn’t have the possibility of being able to decide.
So, I got it, and watching the documentary I really liked a girl who said that she asked her mother if it was an obligation. The same thing happened to me. I thought I was obligated and my mother instead told me that it was a choice, that, in fact, if she could, she wouldn’t have had many daughters. And… that led me to ask her if I had been a mistake and she said, “Certainly not.” It was the best thing that ever happened, but if now she could go back, she wouldn’t have so many daughters. It made me think that I didn’t want to follow that path, it was clear to me that I didn’t want kids, I continue to be convinced of it and… they can tell me that “the ship will sail”, they can say whatever they want but… When they ask me why I don’t have children, I’m just answering because I don’t… I don’t feel like I want kids. I’m not here to have kids. I don’t feel like I can… It’s not a matter of being capable, it’s just not something I feel. There’s not even a specific reason. Here in a small village, with few people, few women, I’ve met more women who decided not to have children than in a city, where you should find more women. In the 30 years I lived there, (Zaragoza), I have met very few women who had decided not to have children. While here I found several in such a small place.»
ESPE: «Hi, I’m Espe, I was born in Granada, Andalusia and I currently live in Boltaña a country in Aragon, where the Espiello festival takes place.
I’m a lunàdiga out of conviction, but I have a daughter. For me, since I was a child, I didn’t like seeing the situation the women in my family where in. It was a very oppressive situation, where women worked at home, took care of everybody, and I didn’t like that role. In the documentary, one of you said she wanted to be a boy, I always wanted to be a boy, until I discovered that being a girl was awesome. That’s it. Motherhood was a long way off. I never had the need to feel something in my belly, nor to give life, or feeling that kind of love. Yes, maybe I was curious about what that kind of maternal and filial love could be, but it wasn’t a love that attracted me. Nowadays, most women feel the need to experience all kinds of love, but I’ve never felt that need. Within the relationships with my partners, with the person I live with, the father of my daughter, the first thing I said when we went to live together, was that it was very clear to myself that I wouldn’t want to have children. Do you want this or not? If you don’t want to, we can continue, or we can move forward up to a point but it must be clear I don’t want them. At one point, a niece arrived and I fell deeply in love with her, and one night I thought… it wouldn’t be a problem having a child, and I got pregnant that same night… Obviously, I was not able to think straight. It happened… and I decided to carry on my daughter’s pregnancy.
First of all, pregnancy was an ordeal for me. In childbirth preparation sessions… I was poorly understood, because they were all very happy to have something alive inside, and for me they were only cramps that made me nauseous… it was a continual rejection of my body, until… Well, more than a rejection, I wasn’t feeling well, that’s what I felt, I didn’t feel good when I was pregnant, I threw up in the morning, feeling tired and heavy. And I always thought I had friends I admired and who I believed deeply in what they told me, who felt good when they were pregnant, I didn’t think it was fake. I’m sure having a being inside of you can be super nice and can make you feel good, but not for me. Then, the relationship with my daughter… fantastic, certainly with its problems, on the other hand, being a mother it’s easy and difficult, but much easier than I imagined. I used to worry so much about how to bring somebody up, how to transmit them… it’s all much more natural, much easier. This is my testimony, which is that… for myself… every woman has the ability to choose what she wants and you have to follow what you want. If she wants to have children, she can be a mother, if you don’t want to, then it doesn’t have to be. If you can’t have them…. we have to adapt to the life we have. But please, let’s study ourselves better, to understand where the kids are coming from, or who manipulates to get them. Surrogacy, or children imported or purchased: you can’t be a mother at all costs.»
CHARLOTTE: «My name is Charlotte, I’m French, I’ve been living here for nine years in a small village near Sobrarbe, not far from here.
I don’t have children; I feel happy without children. I’m not sure to what extent it was a decision or not, I trust life, and I try to listen to it and listen to myself.
Since I was young, I think I have always known that I didn’t want children, what I didn’t know was if it was intuition, fear, protection, because I saw my mother struggling to raise us, and I grew a little insecure. I mean, I don’t know to what extent it was a decision. I also wanted to be a boy, when I was little. Now I feel very happy as a woman and somehow, I’ve experienced what it’s like to be a mother without having children. It’s kind of my theme now, because I like being with myself, I feel happy without children. I think my maternal side was somewhat stunted: as if you were either a mother or not. And now it happened to me to be able to be a mother and create, experience this feeling, that strength to create without being a mother. That’s true. It’s like… having the instinct… not the maternal instinct…. I don’t know how to put it… this creative power that lies dormant within us, as if it were only provided for mothers. And now I’m claiming back this creative power and all that goes with it, I don’t know if I’m aware of it. I am going through this phase.
Having a name to define us, I don’t like to be named, but Lunàdigas sounds very good, I like it. But I don’t like being labelled as a mother or as a lunàdiga. I am a woman and now I feel like the mother of my projects. That’s it.»
MARGOT: «My name is Margot, I’m Dutch, and in the last 13 years I’ve been living in this beautiful corner in the North of Spain. I just watched the documentary on childfree women and I found it very nice. I identify myself as a childfree woman, I identify as a woman and I identify as a lesbian. In my life, I have often thought whether or not to have children and I’ve often thought that I wanted to have children, but I never saw myself as a mother, so I wanted a lot of kids but not be a mother.
It’s a bit complicated… so I thought it couldn’t happen. Either you’re a mother, or you’re not. You cannot have children without being a mother. Well, this has changed when I found out I was a lesbian, because I thought I could be a lesbian and have children. I just had to find a donor by a gay couple and that would be a fantastic result. Of course, it was a bit complicated to find a nice gay couple I could trust. In the meantime, I was thinking: I live in a city, in the Netherlands and I can’t find… I didn’t think I would move to Spain, in the mountains. Then, I thought that the circumstances were not the best to have children by selecting a donor among gay couples in this corner of the Pyrenees, so in the end I decided not to. I see myself as someone who wanted to have children, but who didn’t want to be a mother and I also didn’t want to find myself in a family structure where I should have been a mother. So, I looked for various possibilities to have a child but not having to raise and educate them but I didn’t find it convincing. And I thought it would be better to be alone and so it was.
I’ve said that… You didn’t get anything? I’ve said that… that I had a desire to have a son or a daughter, but I never wished to be a mother myself, to raise children and give birth, nor to be part of of this family structure. I thought, then… if I want a child but I don’t want to be a mother, there is no solution. But after thinking I was a lesbian, maybe more than having a child, I thought about looking for a gay couple and manage it somehow. I started to…»
ESPE: «A family structure is produced even with women.»
MARGOT: «No, it would have been better with the gay couple with…»
REBECA: «That they already arrived with the gift.»
MARGOT: «Yeah, it would be more like… it would be a bit like being the aunt, so with everything already there. At least, that was the plan. Yes, a plan to look for the ideal couple. Then in this corner… It was impossible! Not being able to do that…»
REBECA: «There are so many lunàdigas!»
MARGOT: «If I had gone ahead with this plan, if I had been able to keep going with this plan, I would have adapted my life to this plan, But I didn’t manage, so I adapted the plan to my life, and not to the plan…»
ESPE: «… to have children.»
LEIRE: «One thing I wanted to say that I didn’t say before, is that really the change that the body can do to create when you’re pregnant, always attracted me, but only that. I’ve always been struck by the changes your body undergoes in order to create, but once the child is born, I don’t want this responsibility, neither that energy, nor… That is, not being a mother, but I was curious of the transformation of the body. And feel the transformation happening to create this new life. But not beyond that…»
ESPE: «Well, I… nothing… Besides, then… Later, I had some problems… because I had to have a… episiotomy, when they cut you. And then I had the syndrome… of being mutilated. I had to go in therapy because my body wasn’t doing well. But as the psychologist and the midwife explained to me, for at least one year, your body doesn’t get back in shape. That is, you cannot give birth and the next day… You get milk and everything. It can’t all be great! Come on! I mean it doesn’t work that way. It’s really not a joke! I mean, dear, it takes time! You have to try to pull yourself together, don’t feel as though you’ve been mutilated. It took me almost three months to look at my vagina, on the advice of the psychologist, to see that it wasn’t mutilated, that it was normal.»
LEIRE: «Hormonally, not just physically.»
ESPE: «And then breastfeeding, they say it’s the most beautiful thing, instead there are sores… I felt like a dairy cow, I had cow syndrome, because it’s also fashionable, give when requested. And being there all the time… It hurts because it irritates you. No, but no one explains it to you, they explain things to you as you go along, when a problem arises.»
LEIRE: «My mother always said that the best thing in her life was having her daughters. I’m happy with my part.»
ESPE: «Well, of course it’s very nice. Even for me, my daughter is one of the most important things in my life. One of the most important things in my life, but that doesn’t change the fact that the whole process of being a mother, the whole process of pregnancy and childbirth, has been a burden, no one takes that away. Another thing I try to manage… well, I decided to be a mother, and so having decided, I took care of my daughter, since it cannot be otherwise and I try to do my best. And I’ve always done so starting from the idea that my daughter is not my projection. I don’t project myself on my daughter, so, I have to try to make sure that she is equipped to take her own path. If I had a certain kind of relationship with my mother, I don’t expect that with my daughter is very different, I don’t expect her to become my best friend and that we’ll go around the world together when I’m 70 and she’s 50. She’ll have her friends, I hope!»
CHARLOTTE: «I arrived in Spain and I settled down here, as a couple. I met this person when I was 34 and I found myself at that age looking for a home, stopping the pill trying to have a baby. I said to myself, now I’ve found a man to have children with. But there was something stuck, until the day when I became aware that… that I was telling myself stories, I was fooling myself, “me estaba engañando”. In my head I was thinking… if I don’t have kids now, I won’t have any children. If I separate at 34 and… before I find another person… I became aware that I did not feel free, neither way, with all the conditioning… And all I’ve done was listening to me, and realizing that I was fooling myself and I had to be honest with myself and the man I was with. And so, from there, I realized it wasn’t my thing, whether I desired it or not. The important thing is to follow my path. The conditioning seemed to me very powerful, very strong. My French friends, where one might think the subject would be approached with greater…. they lost hope with me and they suffer a lot. When I say I won’t have them… they say: “Don’t say that!” – Why not?»
MARGOT: «Anyway, you still can!»
REBECA: «The women I know with children, these women managed to tell me: Don’t you want kids? And what will you do when you’re old? Who will take care of you? It’s amazing they say that! You’re really telling me that I should have children so someone will take care of me? Yeah, then maybe I have kids and I feel even more alone, which happens to a lot of older people. And I find that mind-blowing..»
CHARLOTTE: «This thought comes to me from time to time, who will take care of me, but then I say to myself… relax! It’s not that just having kids…»
ESPE: «On the other hand, for most of the women and men we know having kids does not guarantee you won’t die alone, rather a group of friends who take care of each other. It’s easier not to die alone like this, than putting too much trust on children.»
LEIRE: «You’re not thinking about that now?»
ESPE: «It’s hypothetical. I’m just wondering. I’ve been told that several times. What I don’t understand is this idea of… this urgency of preserving your genes.»
LEIRE: «Yeah, that’s another thing.»
MARGOT: «Like what?»
ESPE: «The need to leave the seed… The need to implant the seed…»
LEIRE: «There are too many of us in the world.»
MARGOT: «Like if you don’t have a child or a daughter, what is the meaning of life?»
ESPE: «Not so much, rather some people think that otherwise part of you is lost, that we waste it.»
MARGOT: «In the sense that you have to reproduce.»
LEIRE: «Yes. I don’t think it’s necessary to reproduce because the world is full of people! It’s not a necessity, there are already many of us!»
CHARLOTTE: «Ah… I should also mention that I don’t have any cats or dogs. And I’m fine without them! You don’t even need to get attached to a cat or a dog.»
MARGOT: «For me, as we said, it’s a bit a matter of deceiving yourself. There’s this idea that when you grow up and you become an adult, you have to be in a couple, having a husband and a car and a child or more… right? That is exactly what you do. Kind of unspoken, but in fact… When it turned out that I was a lesbian, this building collapsed.»
CHARLOTTE: «Of course.»
MARGOT: «What were you left with? You had the car … but not the children. That didn’t convince me either. It’s a bit weird.»
CHARLOTTE: «A friend of mine, I don’t mention names, who has a daughter, she told me that not even now they left her alone. As a couple, people asked when she was going to have a child. Once she had her daughter, she thought they’d leave her alone. But no, then it was when you got married and when do you do the second one? They never leave you alone, there’s always some other request.»
MARGOT: «Yes.»
CHARLOTTE: «That’s right.»

Y aquí pues me he encontrado unas cuantas en poco espacio.»
Y a mí no tenía esa necesidad, no la he tenido nunca.
Yo siempre me ponía problemas.
No he dicho que… Vale, he dicho que…
Si no estuviera perdido.»
CHARLOTTE: «Claro. ¿A ti qué te queda?»
MARGOT: «O sea…»
CHARLOTTE: «Sí.»
