In a bookshop in Cuenca, Ecuador, a group of women shares views on the theme of motherhood, claiming the right to self-determination and to non-judgement. In an eco-feminist framework, this testimony analyses the burden of caregiving that weighs on the mothers and grandmothers and the relationship between motherhood and work.

SYBILLA: «I am very happy to have found this word because – yes, you weren’t there – truly until now, the definition was a negative one: a woman without children, that is, I’m missing something. That’s the definition, that you’re missing something, while, having a positive word, without this allusion that you’re missing something… I am very happy with the word Lunàdigas. And I hope that one day we can even open up some space because I think there are a lot of women who in their homes, heads and hearts, they feel lonely and think that these things cannot be said.»
MARIA TERESA: «That’s what I was telling you. Sometimes you hear things and don’t want to share your story, but with people like you, you open up, even if we don’t know each other, because you know we are thinking the same thing. It’s awesome. And immediately, right here, you could do a forum, with more women who want to be mothers and happy with it, and those who don’t want. It would be good, because it’s not about taking sides, mothers here and those who are not there. No. It’s simply about respecting women’s decisions.»
SYBILLA: «Because this happens too, as it happened to me in Germany once… In these groups, those with children and those without, and also among those with children, all mothers, there was a separation between those who had a father for their children, and those who were single.»
MARIA TERESA: «How horrible. Leave us in peace. Enough with all these stereotypes.»
SYBILLA: «The most painful thing is that this happens among women. We met for something that we’ve seen in the program, something attracted our attention on Lunàdigas, for some reason. Because it’s something in transformation. Doesn’t it? I think there’s a cosmic wave, too. Yes… Everything should come out and I think it’s very liberating to put everything on the table, to get it out of darkness, because the guilt, all that is hidden becomes…toxic. We’re flowers, right? How many flowers are there? And one flower is not more beautiful than another, is it?»
MARIA TERESA: «Let us alone, whether we decided to be mothers, with or without husbands, or if we don’t have children, because we don’t want them, we don’t feel like it, or whether we are working mothers, that is, each one must choose what she wants to do with her life. I insist: there is no need to judge.»
SYBILLA: «It’s the first time in Cuenca, that’s why I’ve been here since the beginning, to meet other women, because in truth, so far, with almost every woman I’ve met, there was always this little something: “Yes, but you don’t have no kids.” And also sharing so openly with other women, about how things are going, because yes, I really missed this. Maybe with other foreigners a little bit less. I wanted to meet women here and not always feel the same old story.»
MARIA TERESA: «Then, we must not be afraid to say it, although we don’t know each other, I opened up because I think we’re connected through the same decisions. So, it was awesome, because sometimes when you are in spaces with people, even people that you know, and they start asking you about the kids, you don’t open up, don’t want to say everything, because you know they won’t understand. But with you, who are in the same line of thinking, even if I don’t know you, I had the opportunity to tell what I feel and think and it’s beautiful. Thank you very much.»
ALEXANDRA: «We have the opportunity to express what we feel and think, and maybe there are more people who don’t want to have children, which is not an obligation, which is not an imposition, motherhood must be free, and must be experienced when you want and feel ready. If not, there’s nothing wrong. There’s no reason to feel guilty, or having regrets, or anything else.»
MARIA TERESA: «And the reasons don’t matter either. That is, each person has their own and there’s nothing wrong with that. You must not judge, if you don’t want to be a mother, because you don’t feel like having kids, it’s fine. There’s no problem.»
SYBILLA: «The balance to do… as you said before, no one ever has to justify their decision to be a mother or not. I appreciate the balance we’re creating, and an open discussion, on one side and on the other. And I really hope we’ll manage, here in Latin America, especially here in Cuenca, to talk about it openly, without having to be defensive, right? We really need it. I also experienced the opposite, because in Europe it’s always like this, the pendulum always goes from one extreme to the other, you almost need to justify yourself if you have a child and you stay at home to take care of them, leaving work. That happens too. This is the same problem, the other side of the coin…»
MARIA TERESA: «Too much pressure on the decisions we make. It’s insane.»
SYBILLA: «We need to strike a balance – let’s talk openly – in either case, about one decision and also the other. Let’s open up the space to respect any form of choice, any decision that one makes. That’s sisterhood. Not each one on … – Without judging. – Without judging, because, if we really achieve this, for the next generation it will be different, because young women now have children when and if they want and so they’re happy, and those who don’t want them are happy too.»
ALEXANDRA: «In the couples who adopt, you can clearly see how they love their children unconditionally, because it’s a matter being connected on a daily basis and to feel each other’s love.»
MARIA TERESA: «Even with people who are not your children. I have two nieces, I love them. I can’t imagine such a special love and they’re my nieces, not even with my partner, not even with my cat, which the most wonderful thing. So, I think love has different forms and it is authentic in all its expressions, when they are honest.»
ALEXANDRA: «Yeah, you don’t really think about a lot of things. I also thought about whether to have a daughter, and really with the world we live in, which in a very patriarchal system, I say this is not a system where I want my daughter to live, because there is still so much…»
ELISSA: «So much violence.»
ALEXANDRA: «Indeed! And despite wanting to raise your voice and protest, people keep trying to silence you, and that’s very strong as well. If I had a son, however, obviously teaching him masculinity where they don’t have to feel macho, I also feel the repression on him, the possibility of being bullied or other things happening to him, or that his friends may insult him, and this can also cause depression to a human being. And I don’t think we are prepared, neither men nor women; I sincerely believe that this world is not prepared. I feel like it wouldn’t be responsible to bring a child into this world because it’s still not good. It’s not a world I’d want them to live in.»
ELISSA: «But I’ve also always thought that it’s very nice to be alive, and to enjoy life, but the law in Ecuador, at least, it’s not in a good spot, because there is still a lot of violence, a lot of gender-based violence. It doesn’t allow you to be the kind of man nor the kind of woman you want to be, essentially society doesn’t even allow you to be the person you want to be. And also with climate change, there are too many people in the world.»
ALEXANDRA: «Because we’re actually the worst that happens to the planet and we need to realize that if we overpopulate it, obviously it is necessary to clear more forest, sow more, as there is a greater need to expand therefore more places to build, more space to sow, this will result in less trees and vegetation, less of everything and sooner or later this will bring scarcity of water, of food, of everything. And the population suffers, also for this I don’t think it’s okay to have kids.»
MARIA TERESA: «It would be good to stop reproducing ourselves for a while.»
MARIA TERESA: «There are already many of us. I try to be more positive, I think that in the world, even if it’s a chaos, there are also very good things and I think there are also super positive things Yes, absolutely. The responsibility of having a creature is a lot to think about, but in our societies, we are used that children come “when God wants”, so… What they taught us is that the family is an institution with mom and dad, son and maybe daughter, to have the couple, and a dog… These are cultural forms that from my point of view are not good. I believe that everyone has the right to choose the family you want to have. Yes, so there’s not much else to say… I used to react a lot when they people asked me about children, because people attack us. Surely, they attack us.»
ALEXANDRA: «Sometimes they come to vex you.»
MARIA TERESA: «They come to bother you, but you have to take it easy.»
ALEXANDRA: «Of course.»
MARIA TERESA: «When needed, when you see that people are open and listen to you, you can tell your reasons, if not, nothing.»
SYBILLA: «It’s been that way in other cultures, in the past, where all young women they spent their time getting pregnant, with young children, even with death, which is another taboo.»
ALEXANDRA: «Another taboo.»
SYBILLA: «Exactly, it’s these taboos, perhaps the biggest taboo that still exists.»
MARIA TERESA: «Yes, just like you said, it’s a fact, yes… They make us feel too guilty for our decisions, especially women. If you have children, why did you have them, if you don’t have them, why didn’t you… I have many friends who became mothers when they were young and now that the kids are a little older, they want to go out, have fun, enjoy the time they couldn’t do before, and society makes you feel guilty, like: “What do you do here if your kids are home? What’s going on?” They make you feel guilty if you go out, or even if you quit your job to raise a child, or if you decide to resume work and leave it at the kindergarten. It’s amazing how we women get charged with a lot of guilt. In fact, the whole society, but for us women this burden is greater, this burden of making us feel guilty for the choices we make. And, as you say, it also happens among women, it goes beyond the gender, it’s a very strong cultural theme. And it’s hard to break, but… that’s why I always try to see things in a positive way, not to judge. That’s it: don’t judge. Letting people do what they want is hard. It’s super hard. But we must try not to judge.»
ALEXANDRA: «You have to understand, because maybe they are not prepared to get to that point of reality. I think it’s also lack of empathy but equally one cannot judge, one must understand and if someone has an open mind, you can have an exchange and grow together like this, because you learn from other people.»
MARIA TERESA: «Great, great, great conversation.»
MARIA TERESA: «Even for grandmothers the responsibility to raise their children’s children, it is something that happens very often. It is rare that a grandmother says I don’t want to have grandchildren. Even rarer to say…»
ALEXANDRA: «Many do so because they feel obligated to help their children. Sometimes it’s not that they want to, they feel compelled to do so: since I had children, I have to help them.»
MARIA TERESA: «Yes, a responsibility towards their daughter.»
SYBILLA: «In fact, but this puts the weight on my mother and grandmother, too. I was the only grandchild not to have children and at some point, when my grandmother was 80, she had raised her children and all, she said to me: “You know what, you’re the only one who doesn’t show up with another child. I had many children and grandchildren and I am no longer interested.” But it’s even harder for a grandmother to say that for a mother.»
MARIA TERESA: «Yes, it’s much harder for a grandmother.»
SYBILLA: «In a low voice she said to me: “You know what? I don’t care.” “I am at a point in my life where I can’t do this anymore.” Well, but almost whispering she told me: “You’re the only one who doesn’t burden me with this weight.” What do we do now? I see that grandmothers take this responsibility as a matter of course. This has changed in Europe, as grandmothers with their motorcycles, with their work, do not take on this role. And even my mom. “Do you want children? Fine, but don’t expect me to take care of them. With a lot of love, maybe a couple of hours on Sundays, but don’t count on me, because I won’t”.»
MARIA TERESA: «And these are also the questions I ask myself. If at some point you make the list of the positive things about having children and the negative ones, then it’s like… I’m a super independent woman, I have a job that takes a lot of my time, so thinking if I had a child right now, I’d like to raise him myself, be with him, but I like my job and be financially independent, so I have to think seriously to what I really want. Do I want to have a child to stay home with him and lose my economic independence? Or do I want a child and have the strength to leave him at the nursery, because I don’t have a mom to help me? So, when I started thinking about these things, I said, no, no, no, no, no. If I had a child and won’t be able to be with him, or if I’ll have to be with him, but this would somehow create a conflict over lack of independence, then I’d rather not. There are a lot of things that you have to analyze, because they are beautiful, I like being with children but already when they start to cry, or something else I say to myself: Do I want to take care of this?»
SYBILLA: «No. That’s it, I like them, but… when they smell bad or…»
ALEXANDRA: «They will be with you all your life, not just 5 or 7 years, you will never stop worrying for them all their lives, the whole time! And I feel that this is too strong a bond that I’m not willing to experience. At least I don’t.»

MARIA TERESA: «Que bestia.
Somos flores, ¿no?
¿No? ¿No? ¿No?
SYBILLA: «A baja voz me decía: “¿Sabes qué? No me interesan.
SYBILLA: «No.
