CAYE CAYEJERA: «Hi, I’m Cayetana, I’m from Ecuador I’m an artist and I discovered the power I have to make music for all women.
Ni una menos, we want to stay alive
I had a chance to be the way I want to be, to enjoy my being a woman, of my successes as an artist and as a human rights defender. I was able to do it because I have no children and also because I also decided to create projects that helped me heal this body of mine which has always been watched and that suffers social pressure because of my gender.
I was able to experiment and heal myself through art, theatre and public engagement and I was able to share this healing with the other women. I have decided not to have daughters or sons because I’ve already given life to a lot of projects, to many possibilities for social transformation. And for me those are my children that nourish me and producing in myself the ability to grow.
It’s hard to think about the future without children for the way society sees the caring for and aging women. Anyway, I think… I think if we decided to do this of our lives, women have the ability to resist and support each other on this journey, and not being mothers does not mean we have to be alone. This gives me a very strong sense of female power, to be able to meet other women, many people from other parts of the world because I don’t have a connection which ties me so strongly.
I really love my mom and the way she took care of me and I think all the girls should have the same attention I had, and that I can give the same care to other people. The biological connections is not necessarily what gives you the capacity of caring for children. I believe I have cultivated this in my projects through the way I build my work, and sharing information is a form of motherhood, not biological but a chance to be a woman, create my own self through what I care for, through giving life to my projects, both personal and collective.
I’m Caye Cayejera, I work with many feminist organizations in Ecuador I really like the ability and power to do justice, the calm we give ourselves among women to address the situation we are experiencing in Ecuador living a very deep-rooted conservative schizophrenia and at the same time a hypocrisy of thinking that everything is fine and that women have more rights. I think we should continue to lead by example, I’m an Andean woman, I’m a lesbian, I’m a childless woman I feel the power that many women together to transform the world.
Ni una menos, we want to stay alive
There are a lot of things that worry me, I grew up feeling tortured at school, on the street, from the culture for how they look at women, for how my body is looked at and used for other things as well. When I realized that self-determination can make you react to this and reject violence, I am dismayed to see that in my country there are more and more women killed. Our friends, family, neighbors are murdered because they are women. Now the count is one dead woman every how many days? One every three days! I think when I get a chance to hug and sing and listen to a lot of women and increase our power, it’s hard to think that on the same road a woman gets killed or raped. It is a very difficult situation to manage also because we women are speaking up, we are practicing our way of resisting and transforming to demand justice and denounce.
I feel like we’re able to do many things and that this exposes us to the threats of the patriarchal order who doesn’t want to lose power. That’s why I think we need to keep hugging each other, only together can we eliminate this violence and give new meaning to our lives.

With my heart for Lunàdigas
and the whole world that revolves around the sun
I have the enlightenment of many women
who have walked with me
and all those who are rising now
here is the wave we do not rest
I don’t care what you think of me not getting pregnant
you know where to find me on the square or wherever you want
Caye Cayejera lifts your spirits I’m telling you from Ecuador
there’s no shadow, you know where I’m going
the truth is women will be vindicated from here to the sun
a universe that will expand,
we are women warriors who go everywhere without borders,
you know we have Nicoletta as a friend forever
in Rome or where you’ll be
you know the heart of Caye Cayejera is for you
from Ecuador»

Spagnolo:
