Paola explains that in Bolivia, motherhood is still seen as an inevitable step for women. She, however, firmly stands by her choice not to have children and to seek fulfillment elsewhere.

PAOLA: «I think being child-free in Bolivia is kind of difficult because society wants women, in most of Latin American countries, to be moms. They expect you to marry a guy and to have a baby. It’s like that. I think that’s super different from Europe, right? Or in Europe, they expect you to be a mom, too?»
MOUNIA: «Everywhere, everywhere.»
GREG: «I think anywhere in the world, people push you to be a parent. If you’re a couple, then they will ask you: “when will you have a baby”?»
PAOLA: «Yeah, most of the people say that, but I don’t know. I mean, to find happiness, there are many ways to find happiness. Women, some women think that being a mom, they are going to be happy. That’s going to be their role in life, right?»
GREG: «Their achievement.»
PAOLA: «Yeah, exactly. But others think their greatest achievement will be in professional life, right? But here, no. You turn 25, 26, and you have to be a mom, you have to have a husband, you have to be a housewife. It shouldn’t be like that.»
MOUNIA: «How old are you?»
PAOLA: «I’m 28. But I don’t want a baby. I wouldn’t offer anything to a child because the environment is so polluted. People don’t respect other people because they don’t have values. And it’s like the environment in general is polluted, so I don’t want it.»
ROBERTA: «And what about the Pachamama? Because it’s like the mother, too. Do you think that culture is stronger here? Or being a mother here is connected with this culture about Pachamama. Or do you think it’s just… I don’t know… What do you think about it? Sorry, I have to take it: a childfree with a cat.»
PAOLA: «Pachamama is like a mother… tierra. How do I say “tierra”?»
ROBERTA: «Earth.»
PAOLA: «Mother Earth. But young people don’t talk about that. We don’t celebrate these kinds of things. I think people from the countryside, who are older perhaps, it’s something that they follow, to be honest. And about being a mom… I don’t know. Perhaps people who are not well-educated still believe that. They adore Mother Earth and stuff. They do celebrate it twice a year, I think. I don’t know much about it, to be honest. Okay.»
ROBERTA: «Ok. Do you want to say hello to all the child-free in Italy? Please. And to me today?»
PAOLA: «How do I say “hello” in Italian?»
ROBERTA: «Ciao.»
PAOLA: «”Ciao. Come stai”? I love the way you think, guys. So, follow that and be child-free for all your life. Please!»
