Beatrice M. recounts her career as a biologist and deputy mayor, her return to her roots and the joy of motherhood with the birth of Greta. She emphasises the importance of being able to balance work and family without sacrifice, thanks in part to the support of her partner. For her, having or not having children is a legitimate choice, but society must truly support women.

BEATRICE M: «My name is Beatrice, I come from Calangianus. I am a biologist, sometimes I deal with politics, I am Deputy Mayor of Calangianus and a few months ago I became Greta’s mother, the most beautiful thing!
As a child, I always wanted to be a mother, so much so that with my cousins we always played “mother and son” (this should be said in Italian). We had fun with little things, not like today’s kids. At home, it has always been deeply rooted, and they have always passed on to me the idea of parenthood, but I can say that I’ve had and still have
examples at home of relatives, even close ones, who do not have children. So, it’s completely normal for me, as unfortunately society over the years, especially in the past, has always denigrated those who did not have children.
So, the truth is that for me it is not absolutely so, because a person, apart from the biological aspect, of being able or not to have children, may also decide not to have them by choice and all choices must be respected. That was one of the values that they transmitted to me at home and for me it’s a very normal thing.
I’ve always moved, for study before, and then for work, outside Sardinia: on the continent… even abroad, I have always been involved in research, but afterwards my roots were so strong that I came back here to Calangianus. In our areas they say “Caragnani beddu”. I got back and first of all, I’ve “settled down” with work. In addition to being a biologist, I also teach. And then I started a family.
Motherhood… it is something that gave me… or that maybe I already had because it’s always been part of me… I am a very empathetic person. Perhaps, motherhood has accentuated this empathy even more, but that’s not all, it reinforced a sense of responsibility, a sense of… wanting to do more and always well for others, for the others. In any case, they are values that I don’t just practice at home with my husband, with my daughter, with my mom, with dad, with my brother, I mean… a little bit with everyone, but these values also have an impact on my work with young people and the people I meet in my life as a politician.
As a biologist… let’s say as… a politician, as a person who… I can say that having fewer and fewer children born it’s kind of difficult because from a social point of view it’s… it’s pretty serious. I am convinced and on the one hand I’m also happy, because at least here more or less we are moving forward: politics must be increasingly inclusive, especially for women! As it is pointless to expect, let me say it, to have more and more children and create a family when there are no supports anyway. Because a young girl also asks herself the question: I have to realize myself, I studied, I have to find a stable job, because if I am not independent how do I do it? I can’t go… I can’t think of creating a family anyway and cover all the expenses because the expenses are pretty high! So, one asks two questions and… in any case society leads to a choice: whether to choose to become a mom or choose to work anyway. And this is crazy for me! Because I am a living example: a woman can easily be a mother and at the same time work with no problem. I say this with the utmost peace of mind, because I’m experiencing it anyway on my skin.
Something that surely has changed over the years and which certainly helps women in that sense is also the figure of the modern man. I see it with my husband. I don’t do everything alone at home: both of us take care of the child, and look after the house. Therefore, the division of tasks is essential, especially in 2025. Because without it, surely, instead of going forward, we stop and actually, we go back and stop there.
Surely, being a mother changes your life a little, so they say. True, you have less time, but with the time you have you can still handle it. You need to get organized. In my opinion, a woman who wants to become a mother should not have to choose, “If I become a mother, I can’t work”, because… It is also true that society puts you in a tight spot, if you dedicate yourself more to the family and you neglect the work, it means you’re losing yourself, you do not dedicate time to yourself. If instead, you dedicate yourself to work, it means you neglect family. It’s a dog chasing its tail. But no, a woman must be free to be able to be herself. To be able to choose to do both. Or one or the other, she must still be free to decide.
There is a word in Gallurese, “vacantia”, it’s a term I’ve never used: I have always spoken Gallurese at home but with some older terms I’m not familiar with them. I’ve always used, I’ve always heard “That woman has no children, she cannot have children”, regardless of whether it was, they assumed that… maybe it never crossed their mind that a woman didn’t want children, still some people think so, but they take for granted that they can’t have. It’s normal for me, whether or not to have children is a choice, it must still be a choice, and I have examples at home too, so… I lived both experiences peacefully.
Since I became a mom certainly the commitment to politics has changed from before, changed in terms of time. Politics, like any other job, keeps you very busy, doesn’t it? It requires time and perseverance and above all being serious in the things you do and these maybe are values that are deeply rooted, that is, the fact of committing myself in whatever I’ve always done, from study to work, has always been something that accompanied me. So yes, it has changed compared to three years ago, when I started, almost four years ago, since I started, but it certainly hasn’t changed much because anyway thanks to the help of my family I can manage all things. In short, the thing that matters to me is to still set an example for those women, to those girls, to those adults to be determined in any case in life choices, in whatever they want to do. And why not, anyway it can be an example for Greta, as a grown up, because she’s gonna say: “damn, I had a mom who has done 350,000 things but she never gave up anything”, because in any case, giving up is not fair.»

Gallurese:

Da minóri aggju sempri desideratu divintà mamma, tant’è véru chi cun me’ cugini gjucaami sempri a mamma e figlio (chista và ditta in italianu). Ci diviltìami cun pocu, no com’e li stéddi d’abà.
E tutti li scelti comunque déni esse rispittati.
Socu turrata e mi socu primma dimu “stabilizzata” cu’ lu trabaddu. Oltre a esse biòloga éu m’occupiggju puru d’insegnà. E comunque so di l’alóri chi no sólu pongu in attu in casa, cu’ me’ maritu, cu’ me’fiddóla, cun mamma, cun babbu, cu’ me’ fratéddu, insomma…un pocu cun tutti, ma so di valóri chi si ripercuotini ancóra illu me’ trabaddu, cu’ li stéddi, e cu’ li passoni chi incontru illa me’ ‘ita da pulìttica.
E chistu pal me no dé esistì.
Modernu. Palchì éu lu ‘icu da me’ maritu. Andemmu a ritroso e no concludimu nudda.
V’è una paràula in gaddurésu, vacantia, è un termine chi éu no aggju mai utilizzatu: éu aggju sempri faiddatu gaddurésu in casa però certi términi magari un pocu più passétimi lu tèrmine “antichi” no li cunnoscu. Éu aggju sempri utilizzatu, aggju sempri intésu “chissa fèmina no à stéddi, no pó aé stéddi”, indipendentementi magari daggjìani pa’ scuntatu chi…no pinsàiani magari a li fattu chi una fèmina no vulia aé stéddi, tuttóra celti passoni la pènsani, ma dani pa’ scuntatu chi no póni aé stéddi.
Pa’ candu sarà manna palchì arà a dì: cavolo éu aggju autu una mamma chi à fattu trecentucincanta mìlia cosi però no à mai mollatu nudda, palchì comunque mollà no andà be’.»
