Manuel recounts his experience as a separated father. In addition to being a great responsibility, in which he has treasured the teachings and mistakes of his parents, his relationship with his daughter has given him an extra boost to pursue his goal of becoming an artist.

MANUEL: «Hi, I’m Manuel Attanasio, I am 47 years old and I am an artist.
I became a father at twenty-nine, and I’ve always known that I would become a father. And above all, I always knew that I would have a daughter. It is beautiful. Between me and her mom things didn’t go very well, but going back, I would do exactly the same things over again, because now me and my daughter’s mom we are like brother and sister. We love each other and Catherine, my daughter, for me it’s the most beautiful thing in the world, so it went great.
My parents gave me in principle a good education. But when you get older, you come to terms with your past, with what you received from your parents, and it’s not always positive. The only thing I did, that I was able to do, once I became a father, is not to repeat the same mistakes. Because it is not easy to become aware of these things. Maybe maturity, school education that my parents did not get, unlike me, has been… a very important thing for me.
From my father’s side, I have eight uncles, on my mother’s side, I have eleven. This means that I have about seventy first cousins who have at least two or three children each: so, I have no relatives who have no children. I don’t know what it means!
A dialectal expression for “woman without children”, maybe because at home there has never been this kind of problem, not that I can think of. Maybe “dead branch” is an expression… that could be somewhat related to it, I’m not really sure actually.
Being a parent, at first it was… a bit difficult. My friends made fun of me. Eighteen years ago I was told “you’re done with art, with singing, with music”. But now they had to reconsider. Caterina managed to give me an extra boost. When everything seemed impossible, I put up a good fight to nourish this dream to become an artist, singer, and never left my heart. Anyway, I had to work like a dog for eighteen years. I’ve done a thousand other jobs, but always continuing to be a singer and artist. And now I can say that I’m an artist and a singer, and I’m very proud of it.
Being a father has been immediately a great responsibility. For me there is no such thing as having children and then not take care of them. Maybe this was from my father a very important thing for me, very important that my father passed it on to me. There are many examples to the contrary, but for me it was a great responsibility. I never left my daughter alone, I raised her despite the separation between me and her mom. That is why her mom and myself get along so well, precisely because we both worked a lot on it, for her education.»

Sassarese:

MANUEL: «Ciao, eu soggu Manuel Attanasio, v’aggiu qurantasett’anni, soggu un artista. Eu soggu dibintaddu babbu a ventott’anni, ventinovi, e l’aggiu sempri sabuddu chi sarìsthia dibintaddu babbu, sempri. E soprattutto aggiu sempri sabuddu chi nasciva femina. È una gosa beddissima. Tra me e la mamma li gosi no so andaddi bè, turrendi a dareddu abìa fattu comunque li mattessi cosi, acchì abà, tra me e la mamma, parimmu fradeddu e suredda.
L’unica cosa chi aggiu fattu, pududdu fa, una voltha chi soggu dibintaddu babbu è no fa li mattessi ibagli. Acchì no è faziri abizzassi di chisthi cosi. Forse la maturidai, l’educazioni scolastica, chi no hani avuddu li miei genitori, diversamenti da me, è isthadda una cosa molto importante.
Da parthi di babbu aggiu ottu zii. Da parthi di mamma n’aggiu ondizi. Ciò vuol dire chi aggiu una settantina di cugini di primo grado chi hani a lu mancu dui o tre figliori, quindi no aggiu un parenti chi no ha figliori. No lu soggu cosa vo’ di’. Un’espressione pa una femina chi no ha avuddu figliori, forse pa lu problema chi a casa no v’è isthaddu mai chisthu problema, ok, no mi n’ammentu.
L’amighi mei mi pigliabani in giru. Abà so tutti magnendi althra cosa.
Aggiu fattu mille althri trabagli, parò fendi sempri lu cantante e l’artista.
Pa me no esisthi fà figliori e dabboi mullalli.
