Jhenefer, a young psychologist from Ecuador, tells us how her choice not to have children was influenced by her profession supporting women victims of violence. For Jhenefer, a child would be too big a responsibility for ever.

JHENEFER: «I’m Jennifer Loaiza, I am a psychologist, I am 34 years old and I’m from the city of Zaruma. I have no children, so far, I never even considered the possibility of having children, despite the society we live in demands just that… the patriarchal system believes that women, in order to realize themselves, they must have children, right?
In my family, actually, by my father’s side, my paternal family has never… has never pressured me about having children. I have a lot of aunts and uncles who are single, there was never any pressure… for me to have children. In my family, for my dad, but even from mom, it was not a demand. In the end, I think my mother does feel the need to have grandchildren, but in the end it was my decision. I dedicated myself to travel, work, therefore the thought of being a mother has been completely postponed. Even though I have a lot of friends who have children and society makes you feel it as something you need to do, because you’re a woman. People tell me: “Maybe you won’t get married, but you’re definitely going to have kids.” So I say, but children how, why? And they say: “You must have children so you can fight for them”. It’s as if having a son or a daughter is like an excuse to be able to continue living.
I see it like this, for my mother it was like this. She has been an exceptional mom all time, but I think for me, today, at my age where I am in my life, I believe that being a mother would mean dedicate yourself totally to the other. In many cases, I think it’s a very big sacrifice for women when they have children. Of course, I look at it rationally, and I believe for other women as mothers, this is much more emotional. Nowadays, it’s not a must being a mother, because I think it involves a series of sacrifices as far as personal life is concerned.
Then it’s true… in my work I have encountered very tough experiences. I am a psychologist and I have been working with victims of violence for ten years. With my work I have met also girls and teenagers who have been raped, and as a consequence of this they got pregnant. I believe that this condition is the most shocking to me, because they will be forced to be mothers, not because they decided to. So, the situation is quite dualistic, because on the one hand there is the situation of the act of violence, having to file a complaint and the system forces you to channel it that way, but then, you have this situation that parents push them to have the child, too. And I think, why can’t you have the chance to have an abortion as well?
There are a lot of situations that intertwine and everything, and in the end you respect them because it’s not your decision. I realize that it can be a teenager between the ages of 14 and 16, who will become a mother and who will surely not be ready to be. So, there are a lot of moments where I think it comes into play the satisfaction or not of being a mother. Me, accompanying many women, for 10 years, I think I’ve become very resilient to the thought of being a mother, for difficult and conflictual situations that society offers you. I don’t know if it shows that when I talk about it, for me it is very rational and with zero emotion. So, in this sense I don’t think it’s the same for many women, who maybe they really feel it, but they feel it from the heart.
As for me already… I think the moment to be more… emotional has passed, Today, I am much more cerebral, more rational. It is always said that biologically a woman is ready to be a mom around her 20s, because it’s… I think the body functions in a favorable way to welcome this new life and all that. As for me, I think I wanted to be a mom around 25, but it was more an idea that in the long term I would have been a mom, but then when I reached 30 I said no, I don’t go that way. And for me my main goals were to be able to have a profession, to study, leave the country, do a Master’s degree and I think these have been like my sons or daughters, the results I’ve achieved, where I can recognize myself. But I can’t adapt at this age to focus all my emotions on another person who will depend on me.
Just today I was thinking, when I had to go out and take my dog for a walk, that Luna is a puppy that probably will live maybe ten years, and if I were to travel and move, I could leave her with someone or I could give her away, but you can’t do that with a child. You have to keep them with you, and it’s a lifelong responsibility. On the other hand, I don’t know if the fact of not wanting to have very big responsibilities, I don’t know if it depends on that, too. Because when you’re a mom, once you have children you’ll have to take care of them forever. That is, that bond is not lost. On the other hand, there is this super emotional part, because your children will grow up and will also have to leave, which is part of the evolution within this world, of the life one must lead. So, in that sense… it’s true that emotions are directly connected to this responsibility of being a mother, but I think there are other goals that when you grow up they become priorities and they are necessary for a person.
But I don’t want anyone… you have to transmit a lot, parents usually want to transmit the surname, leave a profession, or leave assets…I don’t know. There’s always something that can be bequeathed, but I think that too… I don’t know if what I’m about to say is okay, but maybe it’s also a super narcissistic feeling, because I don’t think I’m capable to be able to have children and educate them in the best way, because we live in a world where there is… it’s super… convulsed. Despite… or maybe because of my profession, I don’t know if psychology blocked me a lot about it, but I came across so many negative experiences with humans beings, which in the end is like… if I have children, what will they inherit? You can inherit a lot of material things, but as a world, as human beings,
we are not peaceful, I believe that we human beings end up being enemies with each other. So, what would I actually leave them? Of course, I can leave them a home, a profession and so on, but it’s not the best environment where we live, then. I would have nothing to bequeath. Actually, I think that a son or daughter would have to create something of their own, with their own strength.
I have a very close friend, who got pregnant. For her it was very strong because she didn’t know… They go out together but they had not planned greater responsibility, like getting married or being a parent. Her lover left and went on holiday in Europe and I stayed with her accompanying her in this process to decide whether to keep the baby, whether to have an abortion or not. Then… she finally decided to keep it. Perfect, we went to the gynecologist, the first visit where I accompanied her lasted three hours because they did all the exams, very accurate and complete. And this reinforced what I had thought, there would be no problems if someone else got pregnant and I could pay alimony. I know that the patriarchal system in which we live marks it much like this, with a lot of responsibility on women, and great economic responsibility on men. It can also be difficult for men because there is no relationship very close with the child, but it’s much more comfortable to pay a monthly check, visit them on the weekends, instead of having the responsibility to take care of the child and always be together from the point of view of being a mother. My friend had a lot of discomfort, vomiting, nausea, had to skip work, had an abortion threat. And I shared all this with her, but she had to go through all this as a woman that I was supporting.I accompanied her, but as someone who helped her go to the gynaecologist, to the clinic, because her partner wasn’t there, he was on vacation. So, I think that again the pregnancy ends up being a responsibility very big for women, and the men are there to accompany, while it would be much better if both could get pregnant. Once you get pregnant, the next time will be me, so this would be quite fair. On the contrary, I’m not willing to risk getting pregnant.»
