RANIA: "I've always been a bit maternal from a very young age, but when I have... around the age of 18 to 20, I said I wanted to never have children because it consumes you, because I had so much stuff to do. I wanted to write a book, become a doctor, pilot, architect, all that. And I didn't want to have children. And then... And that's always been my opinion, then, one day I didn't get my period, I was late. I was a little worried so I went to gynecologist and it turned out I had an ovarian cyst of 11 cm. I had to... We had to remove the cyst. And I did that, my first operation was... there was no... It was just internally, I forgot what it's called. There, to remove the cyst... They did that... my two doctors. After that, I had to do a check, after 4 months, and when I left, she sent me to another doctor who told me that actually... the procedure didn't work so much because there were cells. Well, he said it was a borderline cancer and that I had to do outright removal of the ovary and stuff around it, I forgot the names of the stuff. Contrary to what I thought, this had touched me a little bit... and then it turned out that I have polycystic ovaries, so I have one that's gone, one that has small cysts that are not going to need another ablation, but still, it's sterile, let's say.
And when you're told that, when you're told that at 24, it's weird because like... you wonder if you made the right decision for saying I didn't want children and now that I can't have any more, I think I have no longer the choice. That's it, the questioning which is unfair, because there are people who never had a choice, whereas at some point, I had a choice. And I don't know, that was it, it was the fact that I could no longer have the power to decide not to have or to have them. You know? Then, I don't know. At the moment no, I don't want to have children, my life changed because I discovered that I could be... let's say a mom differently.
That's it, that's the thing that pushed me to ask myself, it was actually at some point at 26 years old, I had this feeling of wanting to be a mom, but not necessarily a child. All my friendships got a little weird because I was becoming very protective, such as... drink water, eat this, do that, get dressed. It's so weird to want to do that to every animal I find on the street, to every plant, to every person, even if there is... even in my relationships with other women, because I identify as a queer woman. I had a relationship which was also revealing because she was younger than me, although we were only 2 years apart, I became... you know, very... I wasn't dominating her, but I wanted to help her, to guide her through all this. And after the end of all these relationships between friendship, love, all that, I thought to myself: do I want to have children? See, that's it, it came to me, I didn't ask myself the question spontaneously, you know? That's it, so it's a complicated relationship that I have with motherhood. Besides, my project, that I called Plant Motherhood, in fact it's a pun on Planned Motherhood. Well, it's a little different because it's not so much about protection, but choice, at some point in one's life to choose to give this maternal energy to something, to someone, to anyone.
We can do it, we can offer it. It may not be your own child or someone else's child, like in my case it's my plants, because I was giving them names, I even pay attention to any draft, I'm so scared for her. Once upon a time I had a croton, it's an exotic plant and there were mealybugs who attacked her. She was very beautiful, she was tall, with leaves of all colours. It was weird. I protected her in all and every way, I took a toothpick with the alcohol, I started taking them off. And then... Then I lost her, it was everywhere, there were in the roots, unbelievable, bugs everywhere. And so... she was gone.
You see... This need to want to protect them all and pay attention all the time. There, it's even with... even with animals, that's how it is. But regarding animals, it's here because... It's... well, I always wanted to having a dog, but dogs are expensive... So... you feel the need, at some point I told my mother, I want to have a dog, because I have this energy, I want to give this to someone who needs it and here we are. And besides, at a certain moment, I told myself I was going to leave my family home, find a job and adopt a child. But here it's not possible and I don't know if I can or if I want to do it, actually. Because ok you have this desire but you don't have to commit without knowing that you can do it. And I don't know, it's a big responsibility that I choose not to take, not to commit."soggetto scelta ginecologia mestruazioni figli ovaie sterilizzazione protezione cura maternità istinto materno piante amicizia animali domestici
