FIDA: "I live here on my own, I used to live with my family: my parents, my sister and my brother, then I went abroad, and then got back and all. When I came back, I moved to Tunis, I rented a house, closer to work than to my parents. It was a bit difficult at first, for them to understand my need to live alone, but now we're fine. It just took a little while, and I was expecting it.
Yes, few women do, but also men in reality. If you don't need to leave the city where you live for professional reasons, for your studies or to work in another city, you don't leave the house unless you get married. But I feel that for my generation, or even slightly younger people it has become more widespread for young people who can afford it financially, because there is that aspect as well. In general, even when there is the possibility with the family, or the decision is made, financially it can be difficult. But I started to see younger people, both women and men, maybe even a little more girls, who live in shared apartments.
It's not something I'm considering, to live as a couple, but not something I refuse totally. It depends on whether one day I'll meet someone with whom I want to share my life and build a life together or not. It's quite open, it is not a goal in itself. It is a question that many ask me when I say I don't want children, I don't think I'd change my mind if I meet someone with whom build a life who wants children. My answer wouldn't change, although it's not impossible, because having a child is a lifetime commitment, it is a bond from which we do not free ourselves. It's not a compromise! It's not trivial like wanting to live in two different places, there we can compromise, and go to live in a city where I didn't want to live in. It's much bigger than that, I can't change my mind to live someone else's life.
Having a child is a big responsibility and commitment, but it's also a lot of other things. I can see that in people who have children and how much it has changed their lives, positively. I can see it with my parents. I'm not saying it's an ordeal, but I see it as something that would make my life... giving my life to someone else and maybe I don't feel like doing that at all, especially as this person did not choose to exist. I create a life without knowing if there is a need to create it and I dedicate myself to doing just that, in the end. The idea frankly doesn't appeal to me much.
Absolutely, my mother and my father they both have dedicated much of their lives to us. And that's something that I'm very grateful for, everything they've given us makes me who I am now, they gave us the opportunities, they gave us this love, energy, their great generosity and they were happy about it. I believe and I like to think that it made them happy, but I don't see my happiness in that, by dedicating my life to giving life to another human being. It's noble, it's beautiful and someone has to do it to be able to continue to exist, but not everyone has to do it, not necessarily me."
